Sounds like a cost effective conversion for mine if i didn't have to change the rear diff as well as it has the same drive ratio as the STi. Does anyone know for sure if i could just change the box, stick/linkage and prop on a newage WRX Wagon??
Buggers cancelled my op just a couple of days before it was due. Inconsiderate barstewards!!

Which STi, UK or JDM, as that will make a huge difference to your rear diff.BentMetal wrote:Thanks for that Mike.
I've bought a 6 speed from a 2003 STI. I'm not going to change the rear driveshafts, hubs, brakes etc... I'm matching it to a UK Turbo diff and I've got the stick and prop. Maybe not as good conversion as yours, but my immediate problem was to get around my knackered 5 speed - didn't want to spend money rebuilding it only for it to break again.
Maybe in the future I'll go to the bigger rear diff.
As Alyn says, you need either an Auto prop from a classic, an Newage 6 speed prop or 60mm removed from a standard classic 5 speed. Horses for courses on time, availability and cost.
The 6 speeds are pretty tough, with some of the earlier JDM boxes being better than the UK ones as they have bronze bushes on the selector forks rather than plastic like the UK ones.
My JDM DCCD 6 speed has been faultless all season, but it has also had treacle (courtesy of Alyn) lubricating it all year to good effect. Thats a stark contrast to my previous 2 years efforts with 5 speeds.
If its a day to day road car, and certainly if its a toy, i would strongley recommend you upgrade the gearbox support bushes to the Prodrive/Group N solid ones, as IMO the classic 5 speed ones cant take the extra weight, and the ones of the Newage 6 speed cradle arent any good either on a classic. I would also change the engine mounts to the same. The main reason being that the clearance in the transmission tunnel is somewhat narrow on a classic, and you can occasionally get the box knocking the tunnell under certain driving conditions with the soft bushes.

UK or JDM newage wagon?ScoobieWRX wrote:Sounds like a cost effective conversion for mine if i didn't have to change the rear diff as well as it has the same drive ratio as the STi. Does anyone know for sure if i could just change the box, stick/linkage and prop on a newage WRX Wagon??
Depends which box you get.
Basically, UK 6 speeds up to about 2006/7 (would need code to be sure) came with a 3.9 front diff, 1.1:1 drop gears in the centre and thus you needed a 3.5454 rear diff for it to work smoothly. After this time, eg Duncan's car, they changed to match the JDM cars.
JDM cars generally came with 3.9 front diff, 1:1 drop gears, and need a 3.9 rear diff.
So you can see, if you dont get the right box to match the rear diff, you will soon have a fubared centre diff!

It's a 6 speed from a UK STI and I'm was planning on using the prop from the same car. The diff is from a classic UK Turbo.P20SPD wrote: Which STi, UK or JDM, as that will make a huge difference to your rear diff.

Thanks for the advice on gearbox and engine mounts - I'll look into getting hold of some.

My car is a UK wagon so i guess UK box etc....I already have the 3.9 front diff and 3.54 rear same as the STi which i hope would make for an easy swop and smooth operation thereafter. New bushes for gearbox/engine mounts are already on my xmas list.P20SPD wrote:UK or JDM newage wagon?ScoobieWRX wrote:Sounds like a cost effective conversion for mine if i didn't have to change the rear diff as well as it has the same drive ratio as the STi.
