gtr missfiring real bad

Post by R1dude »

evenin all , just wonderin' if you have any ideas as to what's up with my gtr. whilst overtaking some cars at the weekend i was nearing the front of the group when all of a sudden the gtr started missfiring real bad, i only just got in front of the first car to avoid getting nailed by the oncoming traffic. it doesn't pull and missfires badly at all revs. i limped it home and took the plugs out to see really sooty plugs, all six were equally sooty but i put this down to the 5 mile limp home i had to do. when i came to a hill it would hardly make it up it and when i applied more throttle, it just smoked more(greyish smoke) . i did notice when it first happened that a warning light came on on the dash between the oil warning light and the battery warning light. it was a sort of oval oblong shape with a few slashes through the top part of it. i haven't been able to get this to come on since so can't take a pic of it and my owners book is in jap so can't make out what it is.
i'm stuck now as everything seems to look ok under the bonnet. thanks

While you were overtaking at full boost (what is the spec of your car) did it pop or bang all of a sudden then missfire after that. I am thinking you have just blown a cooler pipe off!

Yep - my money is that an intercooler pipe has popped off .. look down towards left of the engine bay ... see if you can see the big pipes that run onto the intercooler on the left - check the right too ... you may have to remove your bumper ...

but definitely sounds like a pipe off !!.

You don't need a jack to take the front bumper off!

i have extra strengthening bars holding the bumper in place, making it rigid and stronger and it's so low i can't get to the securing bolts

it's taken me this long to actually get a minute to myself and have a look at the car. as you all said, it was a big intercoler pipe that had come loose on the drivers side of the car. took some manhandleing and some effing and jeffing but it's on now, and once the new set of plugs were installed it fired up first go. haven't got it down off the axle stands yet so haven't been for a run, but it sounded fine. :)
