I was hoping it would change the vews to classic as I don't like the gimmicky stuff on XP or Vista.

I'll give it a try without and see what I get. NT backup looks good though, I only know a fraction of what's on offer with Windows. :oops:

Getting there, thanks to Tony's help.

The initial problem stemmed from a faulty Viewsonic monitor that was bought last July :roll: I assumed a 12 month warranty but after looking at their website and calling them, it has a 3 year warranty and a new one will be delivered within 48 hours, they said

It wouldn't start up after a switch off of a couple of hours but would just sit and flash. It does the same on the new computer and the borrowed monitor I have works fine.

Not too sure about Vista but I've felt the same apprehension with each OS change since the first Windows that one came on 20+ floppies and took an age to configure.

Latest head scratching is over the email accounts. Vista doesn't allow multiple email accounts on one user account, like XP does.

I've had to generate a user a/c for each mail a/c but can't yet figure how to import the data. When I try, it tells me I don't have Admin rights on that user a/c. :x

Keep plodding but I thought I'd update the situation.

Well to add admin rights:

1) Log in with your administrator account
2) Right Click 'My Computer' and 'Manage'
3) Expand 'Local Users and Groups, and select 'Users'
4) Right click the user you want to give admin rights, and select properties
5) Click the 'Member Of' tab, press 'Add', type 'Administrators' into the box
6) press Ok twice
Repeat for all users,

Now log in with your promoted user.


I have not had much experience with Vista and OE yet...

Another update

The file transfer is diferent to what you describe Tony.

Vista has it's own 'transfer files and settings' programme. You need to start that prog. on the Vista machine to get a cpy of it, then run the prog. on the non Vista computer. It's then a question of loading the info onto whatever media you choose and transfering that to Vista. The settings part works a treat and I now have my familiar views, folders and files. The bulk of the data I loaded onto my second hard drive and swapped it into the new computer, so that's all there.

It would have been nice to have known what to expect as, with outlook express, or MS Mail as it now is, it loads all the email users into the one account although it does separate them by folders. Having Admin rights doesn't automatically allow access to the system folders and I'm not sure how to get it. But I'll keep plodding.

Still not sure about Vista, it's less easy to navigate through windows explorer with restricted access. It's anoyingly gimmicky and awfully 'twee' :x

It does seem more stable than XP and have yet to see the box that says 'xyz prog has done a no no and will be shut down. Click to report to MS.'

An odd quirk is again with email. It doesn't like receiving messages after the initial start up and I have to re-boot each time to receive mails. If I click send & receive, it goes through the motions of connecting and even says 'downloading message 1 of x messages' but, unless there's no messages, it just times out and asks, wait or stop, at which point I re-boot. I needed to phone Virgin support to configure the broadband modem and downloaded the Vista drivers, as I'm switching to Sky and hve a new modem, I'll wait and see if the problem disappears.
