Major Engine Failure - Advice Needed!!

Post by boucherie »

First off this isnt my engine, its a mate of mine that had his engine rebuilt, did 500 miles running in then went to have it mapped up on an emanage and 135miles later - kaboom!

Boost levels were same after mapping as running in, around 1.2Bar

as you can see from the pics its a right state, prior to mapping the cylinders were 170psi, no smoke etc out the back. Injectors have since been proved as fully functional as well. He did say that when it was being mapped the idle was all over the place 800-1600rpm.

He suspects major borewashing of number 3 cylinder, but what do you guys reckon happened, if you need more info il try and get some for you?

Was it just a rebuild, or was it running other upgraded parts? The emanage should not really have been altering the stock idle, no point, so I would have questioned the bad idle.

Is the block cracked, or is it just badly scored?

How did the spark plug ends look? Any pitting? or heavy black sooting? The piston crowns look very clean.

only 135 miles after mapping - heart breaking....

Don't think any of the mappers I know will continue whilst the idle is erratic. Maybe the injectors were OK out of the engine but there could have been leakage past a nicked O ring. Could be any number of things. IMO

it was a full forged rebuilt engine with piper cams, ported and flowed head, Z32 and 700cc injectors.

just got this info from him:

the fact remains that something there went badly wrong, piston and block were today checked by an engineering company, who confirmed my thoughts of overfuelling and eventual overheating being the most likely cause for the melt down. the bores were miced up and are all within spec for those pistons.
even the engineer said that he had never seen such damage in so short amount of miles to occur, especially with uprated internals, and admitted it was unusual.

to say he's gutted is putting it lightly but now he wants to get another one built up and use it purely on the track, im trying to get him on here!!

O dear. when edd done mine he complained that he could get a good enough reading from my 5" tail pipe, when he mapped it the 1st time, when you was idleing you could smell neat fuel coming into the car. then he mapped it again the smell went but i was getting very bad mpg and black soot was all over the back of the car.

only recently i took it to paul at engine advantages he said he didnt really need to look at the readings he said "you can hear its running rich" so he was leaning it out gradually. now no nasty smoke or smell comes from behind now, and still make the same power.

i think edd really needs to get a better wideband lambda sensor. apart form that he does no his stuff. do you know if he is going to help boby or is he denieying it was his fault?

i think this quote from bobby explains alot,

"and the customer support afterwards is quite simply non existant, your prob you sort it kind of attitude, and this is what wound me up more than the engine going bang!"

i will try and get him on here as a member as the plans he's got for his new rebuild will really make his R a track demon!

It would have being worth checking to see where the joints for the oil control ring were positioned, the lump out of the piston would suggest a overlap had occured
