Track day tyres for 16" wheels?

Post by Gsi_Joe »

Hello, new to the site and am hoping to get some advice for tyres...

My car is a big heavy Volvo S70 T5 (fwd), and i'm thinking about putting some road-legal trackday tyres on (just the fronts) for an upcoming trip to Oulton Park.

Now the 'correct' size for my wheels are 205/50/16, which doesn't give me much choice from what i've found; http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m12b0s679p0

There's only a choice of two there, with a massive price difference between the two?!?

So does anyone have a recommendation for a track-day tyre, that performs well under a heavy load, and is available in 205/50/16??

Or would it be wise/unwise to go for a different size tyre? i.e. go wider, or more/less profile in order to open up more choices for a tyre??

Many thanks for any help/advice given,

Joe :)

check out ears.co.uk for cheaper trackday/tarmac tyres. i recommend the RB5 which is about 55 quid in 16" fitment :)

I would concur with Andy that EARS are very competitive for so called motorsports tyres.

I see no reason why you would have to stick to a 205/50. That tyre size was chosen as the best all around size for a compromise between all of the factors that need to be considered when you're making a road car. You want grip and performance first and foremost so see what sort of options other people are using that drive your car and go from there. You may even be able to pick up some part worn trackday tyres if you have the budget for some other wheels. That may be a better idea if you can stretch to it.........

I do know people that run differing widths front to back and see no real problem with this, although you'll obviously make the steering heavier by going wider. Knowing T5 steering very well (I've had two) you don't get the best feedback anyway so I personally wouldn't bother. A better compound and a more commonly available size would be my choice.

Welcome to the site by the way.

It's worth Joe outlining what his budget and expectations are for the tyres Russ. These Toyo's are excellent in terms of outright grip but that is always at the expense of durability and on a heavy old bus like a T5, R888's won't last five minutes. They will grip like buggery while they do last though :D Bladey runs these on his GT3 if you want more information.

I like the look of the RB5's (and the price!) apart from the fact of relying on the Great British weather for it to be dry...

I've tried asking people on a performance Volvo site about changing the width/profile of the tyres for track use but little feedback as yet :(

I am in the process of getting another pair of T5 wheels for my track-tyres to go onto, so it's just the tyres themselves i'm looking for. I don't really know how much I want to spend, preferably as little as possible for as much as possible (but that rarely happens!). I've heard that heavy cars can eat 888's for fun, so am dubious to getting those...

Alright mate! Got the link for this place from pics of your car on VPCUK ;)

So when you say the bottom ones, do you mean the 225/45/16? Will they fit on ok??

Maybe the RB5's could be an option, then if it rains I could use my everyday road tyres (yoko advan?) hmm....

Thanks for the replies people!

Cheers mate, I've tried again to see if anyone has 225 wide tyres fitted to their 16" wheels, because i'd like to know what kind of differences it makes etc.

It's gonna be getting on for

Yeah it's looking like it might be them in my standard size (205/50/16), as i'm having no joy in finding definitive answers regarding wider tyres, 225 etc...

If I got the RB5's (moulded slicks) though, I presume they would be a waste of time if it started to rain??

Also, I have absolutely no idea what compound would be best, Superdoft, Soft, Soft/Medium?? I presume it might be the hardest of the three (Soft/Medium) due to the weight of the car??

Many thanks,

Joe :)
