300zx Slicktop track build

Thought I would get this build thread started up. As well as my road going zed I have a rare hardtop version hidden in the back of the workshop too. Did a couple of shows on the NA engine and then stripped her back to a shell to do a complete revamp and serious track car. I don't get as much time as I would like on all the motors so this is on the back burner for now.

This was how we was looking.

Plans then. Well I have a 15k ish VG engine build that I was going to use and aim for 700+ with Nos. I'm now selling the engine in parts as I wouldn't want anyone else to build it and get the potential :) have already had deposits on parts so it is now certain.

That leaves me with the shell and to name a few parts on the shelf.

ATL fuel cell
K Sport 12 pot front 376mm I think and 8 pot rears
Carbing half cage which I will add sidebars.
300zx autobox paddle shift kit with custom g/box mapping

Various other bits dotted about too.

That leaves me with a shell with no engine, no boot, no doors, no bonnet and no wings. But I do have lots of plans and the engineering skills to make things happen.

So the VG being a heavy underpowered lump with extreme prices to uprate and takes up a whole lot of room is gone.

RB26 is all I'm gonna say ;)

Look forward to seeing this come together, sounds like it's going to be a bit of a beast once done.

If you are serious about doing this conversion then it might be an idea to plan on importing an OS RB30DETT kit from Japan sooner rather than later, I believe the OS kit increases bore and stroke to 86mm respectively. It uses the RB26 block (a tested N1 I'm guessing would be advisable) as this appears to be the route that a lot of larger powered GTR's have gone down, which is no doubt where you'd end up heading anyway.

A few of the OZ GTR's are utilising the old RB30 from the Holden/Commodore (I can't remember what it's called) but the OS option is the route that I'd go down if I was inclined to spend a fortune on the Pariah of Jap imports....oh wait :D

Well for the moment I need to stop ploughing 10k into a build until Ive got it in prime spot for the moment. But the RIPS link you sent me before Pez is saved ;) once all the engineering is in place for the RB and tested then it's quite easy to drop the lump in and it is well documented on its own dedicated forum, RBZ32.

If I was you I'd also consider 'slightly' modifying the zed shell, basically get a scrawny gimp and his granddad to do a bit of this:

Come to think of it.....I'd just spend £15k-£20k on a well sorted GTR and save myself a whole load of heartache, that way you'd be doing a lot more of this :driving: and a lot less of this :banghead:

Ha I enjoy the head banging though and the crazy little mods I do :)

I seen one of the TA Zeds has moved the Rad to the boot hmm

It's all trial and error in the name of progress mate.....maybe that'll go some way to closing the lap time deficit

Just means where am I gonna stick the nos tanks. Something is off with the cars to not be competitive and I think it's weight along with a fat VG. Engine weight comparisons is around 30kg less in RB I believe :)

I only want to do it for something different. If I was really mental id cut the crap and get a 2JZ

Do that then mate, Mitch up at Drift Garage has a lot of experience with 1JZ conversions (last time I was up there he was finishing off a 1JZ conversion into a customers old Merc' and to be fair it looked like a factory option, it was that neat)

I'm sure he'd be able to sort out a 2JZ conversion, though I suspect you wouldn't get much change from £8k with fitting and parts (and that would be a low mileage stock 2JZ with manual box at a guess) still good for a reliable bit of poke!

Well it is all options. I'm looking into buying a house soon with a double garage and workshop which would mean a lot more time to tinker away on the cars when I was back. This would see projects moving along a lot quicker as time is the only thing I don't have enough of at the moment.
