TonyB's Scooby

Post by TonyB »

So after a the Gen7 Celica died before it got started, oil starvation killed the bottom end, I went on the hunt for a new toy (with a lot of sucking up at home to keep the Mrs on side). A couple of weeks in I started taking notice of the price Newage Scoobies are going for these days and went looking at a few. I wanted low-mid mileage, 2.0t, good history, and standard to find a good base to play with, blobeye, and the newer the better.

I stumbled across a nicely modded car, impeccable history, and quite a distance away. I did not want the 3" de-catted system fitted, nor did I want the decals or harsh ride. However I kept coming back to it. Went to see it and became convinced it was a good'un and I really like it. All the mods I would end up doing anyway minus OTT zorst and decals.... Anyway a week ago it was mine :D

So here are a few pics, I have been too busy under the bonnet and driving it to take any myself.

Mods since buying
So I have ordered the front and center sections of the Prodrive exhaust, including sports cat with second de-cat. On the look out for a Prodrive backbox - such a shame the original prodrive exhaust system was not still with the car.

After extensive mapping of my GT4 myself I really want to get to play with the Scooby ECU. It is a shame has been locked by the ECUTEK licence and the ECUTEK software not available. If anyone can point me to a workaround to the lock please let me know - I have not been looking long.
To aid the above, and to keep an eye on AFR when I swap the exhaust I have bought an Innovate MTX-L and plan to order a Tactrix module to pair it with for logging and analysing.
I have to get a sensor bung welded on the downpipe this week so I can get it all fitted this weekend.

Decals.... well they are growing on me, I will leave them a while before deciding.

So, I hope you guys like?

Yep, bin the stickers but what a nice car mate and really good condition.

Funnily you mention the price, a mate of mine has just bought a 2005 STI (same shape as yours) and he got a tremendous bargain. Deffo some to be had at the mo.

Nice car and you have to keep the exhaust as its how a Scooby was meant to sound ;)

Cheers guys, I got such a great deal on this car and I smile every time I drive it. I can not wait to get it on track. I am fitting the Prodrive sports cat, as I could do without the hassle at MOT time, and I will see how loud it is then. I am not convinced I would get away with it as it stands WRT track sound levels. Thoughts?

Yeah that's a fair call mate, I'm actually fitting a sports cat to mine rather than the decat for the same reason (MOT).

How loud is the prodrive one ? Is it louder when going for it and quieter at other times ?

Love that!
Decals make it!!!!
Looks like the airfilter could do with moving somewhere out of the way.

Lovely model. Cracking spec, awful graphics. Each to their own, but Damn , they have nt aged well. Only being opinionated as the rest of the car is so good.

Welcome back Tony, that looks like a nice example mate. It's funny how times have changed as a few years ago if you had an Impreza graphics were almost mandatory :) There is a guy near me who has the same kind of model as yours, same colour bodyshell, no stickers, anthracite wheels and driven like he is immune from prosecution :D The gist is, as soon as I see or hear it I smile and he has yet to be seen doing anything else.

Look forward to hearing about your mapping exploits; everyone seems to have a go with Imprezas and I know you did well with the GT4.

Good luck

Well I have test driven a couple with std WRX exhaust - this was not a scooby. Also a couple with prodrive exhaust and I really liked it, nice Scooby burble on idle/low rpm, but open it up and the sound was smooth and stunning.

Getting under the car today with a 2.5" system minus the backbox I have decided to just fit the sports cat downpipe. This will then pass MOT and I will see how it sounds. Tonight I started the car up in the work car park to come home and it set off two car alarms! I ran the GT4 well over 400 horses through a 2.5" system no problem and I am not personally a fan of too much noise for noise sake - if I wanted noise a screamer pipe would not be hard lol
