what would you do?

Post by Scooby_RA »

I been thinking on selling my impreza and have been offered a swap on a skyline R32 GTR. Any advice would be welcome.
I have just got the Impreza the way I wanted it - am I a fool for selling??
Is a GTR just going to be a nightmare, I was looking for a R34 GTT but really need to sell mine first.
I've got mine on PH for 6K, alot I know in the current climate but I really couldn't let it go for any less and would rather keep it than sell it for cheap.

Only real reason for selling mine is now I have done everything I was getting bored
heres mine http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/792936.htm

the spec of the GTR is as follows:
"The car is far from standard it has, HKS GTSS turbos, Bilstein suspension, relocated oil filter, oil cooler, oil catch can, metal head gasket, 4inch Trust exhaust system with matching v band decat, polished rocker cover, Clifford 650 cat 1 alarm, 62k miles, running 326bhp @0.6 bar boost turbos will run all day at 1.4bar which i would have said would push the bhp to well over 400."
the body looks quite clean in a dark black/green colour. I was concerned though as it didn't have GTR on the steering wheel or rev counter, I thought GTRs had this?? could it be a converted GTS? with a RB26dtt in it? how can I tell its a proper GTR??

heres some pics

That is a GTR

No GTR badge on the dash but would have GTR on the steering wheel horn button. Not the end of the world if it's not an OE wheel though as many are old and chucked out.

GTSS turbos are good for 500bhp at 1.4bar, if the internals can handle it, with sufficient fueling mods and suitable management.

Crap brakes though so don't wind the boost up

As for any deal or swap, GTRs are so different to drive. Far heavier but potentially far faster at the top end (certainly in the two specs of the cars as described) I have owned both and for

Ditto, ^^^^^^^^^^^ Brakes would be an absolute must for your first mod on that car. even if it is just brembos on the front which make a whole heap of difference on their own.
I may be getting older but I REFUSE to grow up :D

[-X You're a long way short of everything. There's masses that you could do to your car and get a buzz with each.

The GTR's up on S/net too

I am always very very cautious when people want to swap, it smacks of desperation. I know from Stu's experience how much these buggesr can cost to keep going, and if you know your Scoob, maybe it's better the devil you know.
Ask yourself this, why will he swap for something worth less? (If that's the case)
I saw this on SN as was suspicious then too, but then I am one of lifes cynics!

I've done every thing I wanted, 300bhp is plently for that car, the suspension has been upgraded to suit the power and is still driveable, the brakes are more than capable of stopping the car at its current level, the engine is sweet, the body work is now mint as is the interior. I did fancy some carbon mirrors and more bling under the bonnet though
I understand what your saying Gerry but I think any more power or even stiffer suspension would make it more undriveable on the road. Don't forget its mainly a road car for week end fun.

I welcome the advice guy's I too have my doubts when people want to swop.
I spoke to fast eddy last night about the car as I know nothing about skylines, he was very helpful and I am aware of the potential money pit that it could be. If it has better brakes and wheels I would be more tempted. I'm not really a fan of the standard alloys on that. I do like the shape of the R32 and there are some lovely examples on this site. I was just not sure it was a comparable swop, mine is newer, in overall better condition and more 'sorted' in terms of sensible upgrades, is an R32 worth more as standard than a 95 STi RA?? I know impreza are getting cheap, but mainly they are the scruffy ones??

Thanks for your feedback.

Your car is a long way from a base model like mine, and as such is increasingly sought after. The only cheap Impreza's are the less interesting ones, or the nails.
I know what I'd do, but I normally make a decision, sleep on it, and if I've any lingering doubts, it's obviously not the right thing to do. If there's no doubts emerged, then go for it, as the great man said "You're here for a good time, not a long time"

Another long chat this morning with Darren in true no BS BigPower style lol.
This car has some of the right engine add ons like hard intercooler pipe kit, 2530 turbos etc so is ok for around 1.2 bar on the std injectors with management like Stu says, but the guy is only running 0.6 so he says. It has std ecu by the sounds of it. Why has it got these mods and only running std boost on std ecu is my worry. Has it been run at higher at some point or long term in which case has it had det.
I would be very careful and want to do loads of checks on the engine (borescope to check pistons/bores, compression check, oil pressure check etc) before thinking about a deal as it is around

Completely agree with Rob's comment.

Your car is a very desirable model. You've had it for a year and now know it inside out, presumably there are no faults and it's a sound base to build on.

As for more power making your Impreza undriveable! You really should go for a ride in a more powerful model. Mine's 400+ and will happily drive in traffic despite a twin plate clutch. Duncan's is 500+ and gets used for business trips and family outings, or did until recently. Also, more power doesn't have to mean harder suspension.

If you really want a Skyline, take someone with you who knows the things.

If you just fancy a change, don't be in a mad hurry, wait until your car sells and then go cherry pick with cash.

That's what I'd do

My worry having had all the same greif as Eddy and then some is exactly as above.

I would hazard a guess that there is something not right but i may be doing the guy an injustice.
I would defo take someone in the know to have a good look at the car and do as many checks as possible. Skylines are probably THE most expensive toy to play with. However (and i am sure a lot will agree) the smiles you will get from just owning one of these almost makes it worthwhile.
A good car in that spec IMHO is worth @
Well the skyline is gone for good But how cool is my little replacement!!!!! 7lbs 12oz of pure joy....
