Dear all,
after a we absence having sold my beloved 4be Sierra, my mate Nigel and I have got an 88 E30 BMW 3 Series, to play with on track days, and prepare for the 'Ring in the Spring.
(Our long term aim is to enter into the e30 race series)
We'll be after advice from those in the know, and good contacts too!
The pics will follow soon, but to paint a picture, it's a white, 2 door, manual, non sunroof jobby, so it should be a good stiff base for a car that will spend it's life up on its door handles!
Anyone after standard BMW trim, wheels, hubcaps, headunit etc, you know where to ask!

E30 Ring project 290708 with pics- nearly done!
barc.net has some details, but it originated a few years ago as SELOC, then onto a few other acronyms which i cannot remember what they mean!
Basically, No engine mods apart from any filter and exhaust you want. Must be MOT' able, must use Toyo 888's, and must be safety caged/ extinguished etc. Can run any suspension setup as long as it uses the original pick up points. Only 318 or 320 engines, no chips, cams, lightened flywheels etc.
We looked at a few, and they are either rust buckets, or loads of money.
We went down the 318 route after driving them back to back, and preferring the lighter feel, and more neutral handling of the smaller engine. The torque is more useable for the smaller engine also, but once either car is stripped down, there'll be little difference on the track, which is what makes the racing so good.
(One mag quotes the first and last (18th) car being within 4-5 secs of eachother across the line.)
I'll have some pic's by the weekend, as it'll be stripped down by then, and our shopping list will be compiled.

Found some info from a guy on http://www.e30zone.net and looks like a good series.
Good luck with the project and racing.
Just got to get me a car now!! :-D

141107 Update
When we took the wee beastie out for its test drive, we had one of those leap of faith moments, as the engine pulled hard and smooth (well as hard and smooth as one of these can
) but as you tried to pick the revs up from idle, and released the revs from higher up the rev range, there was a noise as if something near the distributor or cam belt area chirped or vibrated against something. Having seen a couple of these, and Nigel having owned loads of Bm's we decided we'd take the risk. (It didnt sound like the valve train, and sounded like plastic on metal as opposed to metal on metal)
Anyway, we started stripping the cam cover down after trying a few things, and discovered that the cam belt was so loose on one side of the loop that it would move about 2cm in either direction of the centre
How it had nt come off and ruined the top of the engine, I readlly dont know.
Anyway, a new belt, tensioner and idler wheels all ordered along with engine mounts, gearbox mounts and service items should get it in good order before we start the fun of ripping stuff out! I'll have some PICS by the weekend.

I have recently acquired with a mate an old E30 for track days, a sprint trip to the ring, and after that PBMW racing (fingers crossed!)
It was chosen as the racing is cheap and fun, and long term it will provide a strong light base.
Anyone who's up on the details will know how tight the racing is
We went for a non sunroof, 318 two door base model, so its a light as can be (till i get my 6'4" , 16 stone arse in it!)
Its had one owner from new, has a FBMWSH, and 80k on the clock.
The lovely cloth trim will get sold, the lovelier still hubcaps will get sold, and it'll get done up as the budget allows.
We've stripped down the engine and the block, serviced it, replaced the normal thermostat, waterpump, cambelt etc etc. It nows lovely, and sideways thanks to the ditchfinder tyres fitted to our cheap BBS eBay purchased wheels.
Next up is a race spec Milltek exhaust, and induction kit. (no other mods allowed for the engine) Suspension mods are free, so coilovers will be sorted once the budget allows, as will seats and harnesses.
Oh look, a tiny engine in bits...

Soon have an induction kit on here....

Moody nightshot....on a roundabout naturally!

More to follow once we get some more time/bits!
Sorry for the rubbish photo's, got very limted room and a rubbish camera...must try harder :?
