Spence bought a cheap STi5RA a while back.



It was so cheap it immediately blew up. A comp check reaveled nothing on 4, so out came the engine with suspected HGF;





Apart it came:



Oh look! Pre 96 wrx internals in an STi5; bugger!



And a cast piston on number 4 with broken ringland (not HGF).



After a bit of a think, one of our distributors sorted us out with a nice forged engine (saving me alot of time not having to rebuild the old shorty like I did on my old wrx. Fun, but time consuming). I had a bit of time spare yesterday so thought I'd better get on with building it up again:



A quick clean of the heads (big parts washer essential here)



Block prepped:



One head on:



Cams/buckets refitted.



Progress so far:



A cam oil seal and rocker cover gaskets have bitten the dust, so will order those up while installing pumps and modine today.

Why did they put wrx internals in there? - just to sell it?

We knew it had a phase 1 CDB and some receipts that indicated forged internals (and a mega engine bill!!!), but basically they'd just attached some lovely 5 heads to a nasty stock V1 shortblock. Car was so cheap it was worth the risk.

Just got to sort fuelling and turbo out. (mod the 440s and see what we can get on the blower front).

Its still on stockish suspension, brakes, etc and primarily aimed at the road, yours is much more compo-focussed, don't think this would bother you on a track. Might annoy you on a bumpy B-road

yours has a lumpy idle on Simtek Logan?

Nah, I am on Gems, bit old skool these days for road cars, but does the job and the numbers and drive tell the story

I was going to get a Simtek but Steve Simpson hadn't developed the MY99/00 one when I needed to sort something out, and paying

Ecutek do a MAFless option now, not sure if it is available for this MY though. I wouldnt want to pay over a grand for a less capable ECU than the one already under the passengers feet! I think an ecutek remap would certainly add value to a car in my eyes as it would have a custom map and licence on board and let me retain my knock control and diagnostics etc, essential on a road car to my mind.

I doubt the turbo we will run will require MAF deletion tbh. Did yours pack up Logan?
