Bigpower

Thought I should get round to posting some details of my old Golf. It may not be classed as "bigpower" but it sure brings a smile to me when i'm driving it. This started out as my everyday drive, i then started taking things off and adding stupid things on and it wasn't getting practical for a daily drive, so the decision was made to make it into a track toy.




Spec is as follows

Engine,
1.8 8valve gti, Piper cam, big valve head, engine prepared by Scole Engineering, Vernier pully, modified air filter, 4 branch manifold, Ashley exhaust system. (135 BHP estimate)

Chassis
Front and rear strut brace, rear Rollcentre cage.

Interior
(Not alot!) Cobra evolution drivers seat, cut down dash, quick release steering wheel, perspex windows.
Have taken out around 150kg of un-needed weight!!

Brakes/Wheels/Suspension
Brembo disc front, rear standard. TSW wheels, Avon ACB10 control tyres. Raceland lowered suspension.


I have done around 20 trackdays with it with no major problems, although I tried some sprinting last year at Bruntingthorpe and managed to blow the diff and clutch :x . This has now been replaced and running fine.

I hope to be doing a few trackdays this year and try my hand at sprinting. Future plans for car are front cage and bigger engine, maybe a 1.8T. Watch this space.........

About time you got some details of the old war machine up on the site.

Having been in the car at Snetterton and Cadwell, and followed it around Donington I can happily say that Steve uses all of the power very effectively indeed. It would take a well sorted car to get around Cadwell quicker than this, even then I have a feeling that Steve's Mk 2 would be filling your rear view on some of the tighter stuff

Another one the drivers that I would put into the 'Complete Animal' class with Kev@tkl and to a lesser extent Gary@APT, Steve's driving style looks he is trying to kill the car every time he goes out in it (Hows the gearbox mate? )

This will be great fun at Marham and our track evenings in the summer, buggsy a pax lap when you get that cage fitted :thumb:

I went aound Cadwell with Steve in this and it was one of my first trackdays and I will always remember it .........."Enjoy yourself" said Stu as he pushed me into the passenger seat and laughed. The next 10 mins were eye opening and a lesson learnt in driving fast :-D

Had a bit of spare cash and time to spend on the old girl, so a front cage was made and fitted :-D

Comes with removable door bars



Also had a rear diaginal fitted



Ready to go for Marham next Saturday :-D

Looks good Steve but how are you gonna get that big arse of yours over that high jump bar?!

That should make a bit of difference on the torsional rigidity of the car. Do you intend to get gussets welded in for the A and B pillars? Will make a big difference mate..........about

The time had come to give te Golf a fresh coat of paint, the plan was Mercedes sprinter white and green trim.


Had a loan of a mates unit and a few mates to give me a hand.


Off loaded the car Friday evening, ready for a Saturday morning start.

First job was to start taking the car apart







The side trim was abit of a pig to get off, but a heat gun soon put pay to it :-D




Next job was to key the paint work








Once this was done, the masking up could be started







Then the car was panelled wiped and then the exciting bit came :-D out came the paint



The first couple of coats were applied









After 7 coats we were getting close to running out of paint. At 11.00pm we called it a night, and would return in the morning to start putting it together again.

The following morning the task of reassembling was in order (and clearing up all the empty beer cans :-D )





A new windscreen was fitted



The wheels were painted, from these



To these, in Ford signal green




The time had come to open the doors and bring the car out, everyone was waiting to see the results










Just a big cheers to the mates that leant a BIG hand over the weekend, Miggs, Stuart, Mark, Jamie and Mike for the use of the unit.


Also Stu and Ben who popped down on Sunday to have a quick look :-D

There are a few small jobs to get on with, like arches and trim, also being stickered up. But am really pleased with the results considering the amount of beer that was consumed and the conditions we were working in :-D

wow what a transformation in such a short time window -great effort .nice result 8)
