My Evo5 - long story so far

Hi All,

Thought I'd better put something on here about my car.

Bought the car as a completely standard Evo5, still had the 115mph limiter. Had the car 4 weeks (2 of them I was on holiday), overtaking a car, got a fuel cut (overboost due to knackered turbo actuator), and the shock snapped the cambelt. As it went (as I was overtaking), lost all power and had a funny tickle metallic noise just after. As soon as it happened, it felt expensive. Crawled to the side of the road, nothing, turned over very quickly but nothing, so got AA to take me home.

Removed the head and found a rather big problem, 3 valves had broken off (in 3 different cylinders), and 1 had smashed a hole in one piston, another was embedded in another and the other was lying ontop of the piston. Head was damaged accordingly, so in the bin with the engine.

After much searching I found a complete EVo8MR engine gearbox and turbo, still in a car in Japan. Bought it, took about 12 weeks to arrive, but in the mean time it gave me a good chance to do alot of work on the car.

Unfortuately the car had spent 2 years in Scotland with no underseal, which meant ALOT of work under the car, cleaning the rust, treating and coating, not easy (or rather no nice).

In the mean time I changed the calipers, suspension, had the subframe powder coated, ususal stuff.

Engine arrived, but they could'nt get it started, the donor car had alot of "extras" on it, and they couldn't get it to fire, they found a cam pulley had broken, they replaced it, and when they did a compression test, no.1 was low. So I give them credit, they sent the engine to RG motorsport to sort out before I got the engine, so it was right to start with.

I went down to help remove the engine/box from the car, and take to other bits I'd paid for. We seperated the engine/box and inside was a brand new Exedy Carbon twin plate clutch, KA CHING!!!

So once engine ready, had APR head studs fitted and new HG, so on my drive, on my own got it in.

Cut a long story short, got it running, had various problems (as you do), but running.

So after this spec for the car is as follows :-

Evo8MR engine
Evo8MR turbo
EVo8MR 6 speed gearbox
Exedy twin plate carbon clutch
Apexi PowerFC d-Jetro - Mapped at RG-Motorsport
Apexi AVR-C boost controller
Magnex 3 inch bore turbo back system
Magnex de-cat
Walbro fuel pump
HKS exhaust manifold (cracking manifold, as in it keeps splitting!!!)
Apexi induction kit
Battery relocation
Uprated oil cooler
Flat 4 large intercooler with hardpipe kit
18inch Kosei wheels - toyo T1s
Goodridge brake hoses
Tein springs (coming soon)

If I can work out how to put some pictures here I will, but it's late and I'm tired!!

Cheers,
Gareth.

Sounds like a mission Gareth! A lovely spec and I hope things like the carbon twin plate are signs that you're headed in the right direction.

In order to upload pictures, merely copy and paste the img link from somewhere like Photobucket of the picture you want. If that all seems like to much bother, email them to me and I'll do it this once :thumb:

Welcome to the site.

Cheers guys, I haven't got any pictures here in work so I'll have a go this evening at getting some up.

There are plans afoot for a few other upgrades, but they're more brakes and suspesion. The engine pulls well enough for the moment.

Just need to time/weather and money to do more!!

Cheers,
Gareth.
