Sump and oil cooler update

Post by Rob_B »

ive been working on mocking up my baffled sump over the last few evenings - i have taken a few pics of my progress

i have made the baffles out of cardboard first of all, next steps will be using this carboard as a template to cut the aluminium, then it will offered up on my old block and crank to make sure it does foul on anything

then will be welded in place and ready to fit :)

also my uber cheap oil cooler has arrived, im really happy with it - not only is it in superb condition(nearly new) it was also made by AH Fabrications so also a very very good quality item :sifone:

Fair play Rob; I presumed that baffled sumps require some kind of techie style knowledge about flow, pick ups and that sort of thing.............have you seen a 'proper' one and tried to copy that or are you just winging it? (Excuse the pun)

Going back to an earlier photo, did you buy a kit for your induction or was that just a generic cone filter?

Baffleds sumps arent particularly techie to be honest mate, all they need to do is stop oil sloshing about and keep the oil in the right place(around the oil pick up) the only slight techical pats are making gates help direct the oil where you want it to go/stay

there are alot of decent companies who make them, such as Backdraft motorsport and JBS

this is the baffled sump im emulating:

in regards the induction kit, its a green cotton one which was removed from a 300zx TT, i had a KN panel filter previously...when we got 300zx in for breaking, ben thought it was a good idea to fit the induction fit from that to the S3, i said yes but only if the cone filter would fit straight onto the AFM without any pissing about...and as luck would have it, it did!!

Cool

When I said 'techie' I meant if you were starting from scratch in terms of design, which you clearly aren't! :D That JBS one looks similar to the Backdraft one and they are rated very highly. I may have a look at my induction then as I have a stainless cone filter just sitting around doing FA!

Cheers

little update:

new parts arrived today, firstly thanks to Matt i can now get rid of my engine management light off the dash - he has made me a lambda spacer which i will bolt on to pull the sensor away from the exhaust thus not allowing it to pick up on all the hydro carbons flowing freely through the exhaust(due to the decat)

Image

Also my acusump arrived, so now time to plan where the hell its going to go...lol

Image

as you can see its rather large!!

only other update to note is that i had a small bit of bodywork done, the rear number plate trim has been corroding since i had the car...but now we have our own spray booth i managed to get that painted :) the car is to be machined polished tomorrow to get ride of the years of scratches and swirl marks and in time i will get the bonnet, front and rear bumpers resprayed :)
