I didnt want to take the car all the way back to Nottingham to get it investigated and fixed so with Mike's permission and avice I set about trying to solve it myself. The guys at Area 52 had never seen the issue before and it doesnt appear to be a very common one with only a couple of issues in the states that sounded remotely similar. There was one issue in the UK on JD's car but after speaking to Martin Jeffrey this morning it appears that was ecu plugs not being put in the right holes again by Steve Simpson  good to chat to you anyway Martin and thanks for the tips :thumb:
Anyway, story goes like this:
1 - Unbolt the OCV (Oil Control Valve) - one 10mm bolt - and slide this out on the left hand side of the engine to inspect and see if it is free moving. Easy enough. Looked fine.
2 - check union pipe from the block for blockages that would reduce the oil flow to the AVCS vane mechanism. Cleaned it up and again no obvious issues
3 - remove and reseat all the connectors for the cam position sensor and the OCV solenoid
4 - reflash a map with zero AVCS advance and run it like this for a while. I took the opportunity to head over to Soham and pop in to see Jason

5 - reflash a map with a small amount of advance and log.
The result...
Nicely synchronised

Now onto completing the running in and mapping
