Failure!

Post by RPS13 »

I hope so but I am not there yet. It failed the MOT. Not a scary list though:

- Emissions (what a surprise, but i will find out how far out it was when I pick it up in half an hour)
- No warning lamp when fog light on (apparently it does not count that you can see the back of the light in the cabin when on, since there is with no bulkhead. But the switch i used has a built in LED I just need to wire up correctly)
- Front indicators not orange enough
- And the pas side tail light needed knocking to turn it on.

They are happy for me to play around with the ECU on their machine until it passes the emissions, and the others are 2 just small wiring jobs and a pair of new orange indicator bulbs. Nothing scary, but still irritating after all the hassle so far. I should easily be sorted this weekend for a quick retest next week (Asuming I can work out how to fix the ECU for emmisions without blowing the engine up :? )

Thanks mate - It was a real handfull thanks to the definate track settings on the dampers and bumpy roads. But I had more fun on teh trip to and from Wymondham for the MOT with smoother roads. It does need some real sized rear wheels and tyres put back on though to look right. Those winpy OEM R32 rears make it look like a FWD drag racer!.

Great! It will hopefully be re-tested on monday. I just need to buy some more indicator bulbs tomorrow now, then I can start on more of the non-MOT jobs.

I wish I could be there but work is going to be right in the way of that one again! Good thing I enjoy my work.

Thanks again everyone - From my experience over the last few weeks, this is a great club and a community of very friendly and helpful people. Much better than the few other forums I have any past experiance of (I would normally avoid them, but stu talked me into checking it out and I am very glad he did). I look forward to making it to an event and meeting some more of you in real life.

Overdue Update

Post by RPS13 »

Well it has been a long time since an update but I got fed up with it after things went bad again with the car so I lost the will. :x

However all is now fixed, it is MOTed, registered, and I have done my first drift event too so much happier. :D

After the last post the issue with not staring reoccurred despite everyones assistance. Despite my scare of electronics I spent a day with the car and my multimeter diagnosing everything and stripping out almost the entire engine harness until I found the cause. Underneath the fuse box was a mess and there were all sorts of remains of extra wires plugged in and hacks for an alarm in this cars past. Eventually i tidied the whole thing up, repairing the wiring back to original as much as possible and it worked! I could even repeat the failure so I knew I had finally found the cause. This didnt all happen in time for the planned re-MOT but it did make it back there a week later.

The MOT itself was an issue, until I pointed out to the new tester that he was giving it a CAT test which the car did not need ('92 chassis) and it eventually sailed through its emissions. Even registering the car was a problem, only resolved after the second trip to the DVLA office, but they did appologise. I finally had my registration and Tax waiting for me when I returned from a business trip on the 21st December.

Well, that was all the struggles, but last weekend I put it on a Hunter to give it a decent setup and the next day I drove the car full of tyres, tools and a helpful pitgirl to Norfolk Arena for my first chance to try the car in anger. I wish I had taken more photos but I was distracted by the driving and constant tyre changing required. Luckily Pit Girl Liz filled in for me and got some good videos and a few images of the day.

And a short video, showing just how quickly a set of tyres die in the dry (left rear de-laminates at the end)

It was a great day and much lifted my spirits about buying the car. The only mechanical fault was down to the mechanic not the car, and easily fixed. It was a great day, and due to another event at Lydd had just 4 people turn up giving us as much track time as we could want. I basically ran until I had no tyres left.

Most importantly I not only had a lot of fun, but I also got my License for next years British Drift Championship!
