Rob_B wrote:not bad mot result that dan! i'm with you with your opinion of getting rid of the old girl, i went through similar problems with my old jap box(mine was a lot worse then yours if it makes you feel better :) )

everytime i turned the key i was expecting another problem, it wore thin vry quickly which is why i got shot and went german ;)

Yeah thats what i thought mate :) ive already organised the exhaust to be re welded, and i've got the replacement bulbs. Tomorrow the silencer will be removed and the suspension leg welded up. So things are moving along pretty swiftly for a change.

I do love jap cars to bits, but when they hit a certain age they really do start to fall apart worse than others (maybe not as much as alfas ;) ) just a shame i wasnt older in the 90's and couldve bought one of these new and enjoyed it properly. :smash:

Lets get ready to go german ;)

EDIT: Sorry Mike i just saw your post, you do have a fair point mate. Just a shame i cant keep up financially, but hey ho like you say it'll be good to have another Golf to add to the pack :)

How long before you get tapped up by Trev to buy PGA? :)

Whatever you do, a known car aside, check it and check it again. These are old cars and whilst they are cheap, they may have had muppets tinkering with them for years. I would strongly suggest working out whether you want to buy one that is done or whether you want to do the work yourself and budget accordingly.

Onwards and upwards Dan.

You've had some good times with that car Dan and now it's time to move on:driving:

At least you can say that you had one.

Yep totally fair Stu, i won't be rushing into another car immediately as i'll find one that ticks all the relevent boxes (and save some cash up before hand too) it's fair to say it probably won't happen before i have to insure this again. So we'll see. :)

Exactly mate, and it doesnt mean that i won't ever own another one again because despite the crap ive had with mine i'd still have another one. :smash:

So again today, made shit loads of progress :)

Surprisingly got the exhaust of within 5 minutes;

the broken bracket; (sounds like a pub name)

Oops, thats not good.

So monday that'll all be taken care of with some half decent welds instead of their weak ones. :)

Then it was time to take care of the 'fractured' drop link bracket, which actually was totally busted off by the time i drove it home. excuse lack of photos at this point, but i had the whole lot off;

Surprisingly i can remove and refit the strut without needing a spring compressor. :lurk5: so the broken part was removed from the drop link, then dad re welded onto the bracket and then i put everything back together again. Also the number plate bulb was replaced and is now working again.

Just think Dan, if you had a car that you didn't have to work on you be bored with nothing to do. Good work by the way.

Shame to see you give up on mr 2, but I know exactly what your going through.
As stu says don't do what I do and be impatient, wait for the right one to come along, as nice as PGA looks it is a car that will require work to keep her going due to it's milage and me owning it :D , so would be reluctant selling it to you, that said it may be trouble free from now on. There are good ones out there but my idea of good and others are different, so don't go thinking one top of your budget is as good as another similary priced , there getting the retro coolness now and a lot of people try there luck as some do sell for good money.
I'v no idea if above makes sense but i'v hardly slept since 6am Friday and i'v just sunk another beer.
Small one's are more juicy

Yep that is sound advice Trev, i won't go rushing into another car just yet :) as said before, i'd rather stick with the MR until the right one comes along :thumbs: in the mean time the exhaust will be sorted today and hopefully MOT retested tomorrow, then friday two new tyres on the front before making my way down to Benfleet :D

This morning i had to go over to Griston engineering to discuss materials i'll be using for an assembly i'm designing for work, so an oppertune moment to have the exhaust fixed. And i can safely say that the exhuast has been mended :smash:

That saves potentially 2 weeks of dicking around having it replaced under the lifetime warrenty. So 'if' it ever breaks again after the MOT certificate being issued then i will have it totally replaced, but for now the quick fix was the answer :)

Update: the MOT retest has been booked in for 1pm tomorrow :D can't wait.

Edit: exhaust now refitted and leveled up :D

Wow what a few days this has been :/ firstly i bought some new rubber for the front and popped down to the garage to have them fitted :) they started uncracking the nuts on the wheels until they came across the locking nuts and they kind of accidently snapped the nut :/ so they had to smack fuck out of the locking nuts all round with a lump hammer and an impact socket :smash: <- bit like that, anyway they managed to get all four of them off an apologised for breaking the wheel nut socket so no issue with that, then the tyres were swapped over for some 215's this time and what a difference in front end grip :D very pleased to say the least.

But over the last few weeks ive still had this reoccuring clutch issue, always at high rpm the clutch pedal looses it's pressure and it's a bastard to change gear if it wants to at all from time to time, including a harsh judder when changing from 3rd to 2nd initially i thought maybe i need to give the fluid time to settle/break down a bit. Then me and dad rebled the system assuming their might've been a small airlock in the line but still no joy, so i passed it over the the same garage as above (because they're less than a mile from me) for them to rebleed it just incase me and dad weren't doing it right. When i went to pick the car up they said they've rebled it but it still doesnt engage the gears properly in higher rpm and they say with that coupled with the judder the experienced when driving that the pressure plate has had it. I asked them could it not be the slave cylinder thats weak as it's a different gearbox but no they checked it for any leaks and it was totally fine. :/

Last night was a classic example, i came back from Benfleet and over took a lorry on the carriage way. changed from 2nd to 3rd and i lost all gears, nothing would engage until i had to let the revs die down then it gingerly crunched into gear which is a bit scary when it's night and pissing it down :o

So hopefully tonight i will ask Eddy what he thinks could be up with the car and possibly give it a drive :) onwards and upwards.
