Engine trouble

Post by Daniel »

Well, yesterday my engine decided to throw a wobbly at the main gate of Snetterton at the FPA event which i was looking forward to watching :x

Basically as i was driving down the main straight towards the Snetterton gates when the engine was playing up, i could hear the electric fan running overtime and the digital temp guage was reading 77 degrees, so as i change down and stop at the main gate, pay for the ticket, and the engine stalled, so i looked over to my temp guage and it was then reading 134 degrees :o so the reason why it stalled was because the pistons expanded in the chambers :x so got out, the bloke there helped push it off to one side, and i whipped the front off, to be greeted by loads and loads of rust water all over the engine, and steam was comming out of the rad cap, and the rocker cover :o

Image

i got my mat out of the car, and undid the rad cap and there was nothing but steam, the rad had gone and dumped all the water out of the engine :x then i took the rocker box off completely, and i'm not joking, the oil was boiling like kettle water on the rocker posts. for the next two hours i let that bugger cool down, and wandered off into Snett with a large 5 ltr bottle to fill up with water. i came back to the car, poured the water in the rad, looked underneath, and it was leaking, that' when i knew the rad had it. :roll: so with the other x ltrs of water i doused the engine completley, i then phoned the RAC...

once i spoke to them, they said a patrol man would be out in 2 1/2 hours time to 'inspect' the mini, eventhough i told them that it's got to be trailered home. :roll: so he came, and went, he phoned HQ up and told them what the deal was, and i had to wait another 1 1/4 hours, and this turned up;

Spoke to the recovery chap who was very polite, and was very carefull with the car, due to it being very low :wink:

And then once it was loaded up, we then took the epic ten mile journey back to Thetford :P to inspect what damage lied beneath the surface...

And heres one photo from esses leading to bombhole]http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k42/D ... 0_3699.jpg[/img]

at least i saw something :roll:

So, the engine;

i wasted no time today in ripping it apart, eager to see whether i need a new engine or not, and here are the photos;

Where the rad blew; :x

oil and water drained out;

Despite this, the engine survived :D but i am very shocked indeed, after enduring the same temperature of over twice the boiling point of water, for such a small engine with no water jacket, i thought it was knackered, especially when the pistons expanded in the chambers :grin: so here's what happened;

A. The electric fan was running backwards. :?
B. The water pump went.
C. The radiator went.
D. The head gasket went (so obviously, whatever water was left went straight into the chambers, and then into the sump.

so, i need new parts, oil, oil filter, gaskets and some water to repair it :roll:

what a surprising weekend :D

Check the piston rings - I had this happen to my mini and the rings went about 2 weeks later. Sorry to hear your day was ruined. :(

Yeah, i was thinking about the rings. They are pretty weak on a mini engine if they have a mischeif :(

That's alright :wink: i can't stay mad at it too long, i should expect this more often with such an old engine design :roll:

See if you can find a good 1275GT or 1300 Metro turbo engine. That should improve things a bit if the old engine is shaggered!! I also hear a 1750 Maxi engine will do the job too. Bugger it!! Let's be really silly and go for a a Wolsey 2.2 engine :D:D
Buggers cancelled my op just a couple of days before it was due. Inconsiderate barstewards!! :rant:

Waiting now for another execution date!!:headhack:

Only if it were that simple, a good 1275GT is a very rare thing to find now, especially a metro turbo :( even a normal 1275 is becoming more scarce :x

a 1750 maxi engine is good too, but with my car only weighing 640KG, i think the weight balance would be a bit too much frontward. :?

Is there any way you can fit a bike engine in the front of a mini? ie. without going the whole hog with a z-cars mid-engine conversion.
