I have a couple of 17's (as in a few) that you can have Rob. Think they are 245's though if that's not too wide.

Good progress though. You've done more in a few days than I've done in a few months.

Yes please mate! 245s fit fine on the car, but a stretched tyre moves less whilst drifting. The wrecked rears that came on the car as you have seen are 225/45/18s on a 10" wide rim!

Lots more progress to make and do here, but let me know if I can help you on the skyline too anytime - I owe you plenty of spanner time.

Cool,

Stretched rubber is ideal to begin with,

But as you progress you'll want more lateral grip - same as when on track.

Nice spec, should be over 300bhp and spool like a mofo !!

J.
I have issues !!! :ack2:....I used to be average, now I reminisce !!!

Watch out with the Supra wheels as they have a smaller center bore than the Nissan wheels, might have trouble fitting them.

not much of an update

Damn work and rubbish weather stopping much happening on the car tonight. However I one cool thing for today:

New gear gaiter already done in black leather and red stitching, and all for a packet of tobacco! Thanks Fred if you ever read this.

Job for tomorrow - find a sympathetic MOT station not scared off by rollcages and book it in for a test. Any recommendations in Norfolk?

I can't wait to find out! 330bhp claimed when bought, but I will soon test it out for real.

Cheers for the heads up, but plans are to lathe some spacers after measuring the back spacing on these wheels. So the center bore won't be a worry.

1 MOT and 1 disaster. Please Help :(

Post by RPS13 »

Warning :!: - quite a long post, but there are pretty pictures to look and a way of winning free beer :!:

Well yesterday i booked the car in for an MOT this morning, so after flying back from work I had just one very cold night to get the car finished for its first test.

So, staring with the easy bits and the good stuff:
I fitted the repainted wipers, finished wiring in the rear fog switch, wired up for front lights to be UK Legal and fitted the gorgeous new gear gaiter.

Image

I then tackled the wheels and ride heights. I had a set of Skyline wheels with new tyres (R32) that I planned to fit, but they didn't clear the Tein dampers on the front. Luckily the blinigng 18s the car was imported on had just about legal tread so they could stay there for now. The rears were down to carcus (cheeky importer but just a small matter compared to some other issues) but luckily the spares fitted fine. They just look damn week by comparison to the deep dish 18s. It looks a bit silly but new tyres on the back should give me that important MOT.

Image

As for ride heights - there was just 1" droop at the front and that was almost all spring slack, rattling around on the shock. I took up the slack so the spring was now seated properly when the wheel was raised ( much much safer now), and still silly low but should just about give me speed bump clearance if i am careful. The rears were also raised a little but most of that was then lost with the smaller diameter of the 16s.

Front shock before and after:

Whilst changing the rears There was a big disappointment - the drivers side rear TCA was bent. Not significantly but it was obviously not right and would need replacing ASAP. The Front pads were also about dead despite being told they were new when i bought it. This was just another minor issue of a few problems with the car that I am very unhappy with the importer about. Until now i have not posted about the issues, to give him a chance to make things right, but the list is growing. Later if they are not resolved then i will go into more detail with the rest of the issues.

Moving on - over an hour of struggling to fit a front bumper was next - 8 zip ties, head lights removed and refitted several times, and a few extra holes and finally it looks attached. It will all come off again soon for a real fixing but by now i was just desperate to get done and in the warm.

By now it was 10.30pm, freezing cold, but looking good for the first MOT in the morning. With only a little fuel in the tank I just had 1 last task - try out a speed bump on the way to the MOT station and see if I can make it.

It started up, it drive nicely, it made it over the speed bump. and pulls to one side a bit (probably dodgy tracking and that bent TCA) and most importantly when i dare give it just a little throttle - Damn it is fun! and there is way too much power for the rear traction even at very low rpm on this turbo engine.

THEN IT BROKE! The engine just died.

I was less than a mile form my house on the MOT station route at 11pm. A friend (Dave) who had been helping me had already gone on his way home. I could not restart it, but managed to push it onto a random driveway off the road and called Dave begging for help. As it was low on fuel i assumed it had just run out. I was on a dark country road with no pavement and not prepared to abandon the car to walk home and syphn some fuel from the bike. 30 minutes in the cold freezing to death and Dave arrived with a full can. The engine was still dead. It cranked until the battery died but had no hint of firing. One thing for it - run home, grab the Beemer and a tow roap and get it back home. All done very quickly, but it was still midnight when the car was back home and this very frustrating evening ended.

I tired more fuel and a fully charged battery this morning but it was still no-go so i had to cancel the MOT.

This afternoon I tried the car and even draged Celica Dave into help. The engine had no spark of any form and i just cant work out what is going on. Car electrics are my real weak point, and a hacked about wiring harness for a Power FC, Boost controller, turbo timer and a range of other things i have no idea how to use properly has me completely lost. My car electrics expertise comes down to reading an error code of the OEM ECU and fixing or replacing the offending sensor. The best a Power FC could give me was a sensor check and that left me none the wiser:

Image

I reads the engine speed when cranking so it cant be a dodgy crank sensor. I have used a booster too so it cant be a weak battery. It has coil on plug, so it cant be a dodgy coil pack otherwise only one cylinder would be down. I am just lost now.

Oh - and the "freshly serviced engine with new plugs" advertised had black oil and some very old looking iridiums in it.

Are there any electricians out there? I am really stuck and need some help! Any suggestions greatfully received. Find the problem and win beer!

PS - what are these?

Post by RPS13 »

Just a could of extras:

Can anyone read japaneese? I wonder what these fuses do?

Image

An what on earth is this thing under the dash? I dare not play with it for another electrical issue to arise.

Really sorry to hear about your bad news Rob. Cars, whatever their lineage, seem to do this to you......

I may see you on Sunday. We can exchange horror stories then :thumb:
