Having spent a little time talking to James Newstead this afternoon, builder of several very naughty Mk2's, he reckons that it's not so much the radiator's that are at fault but the weak arsed fan behind it. A decent 8v or turbo diesel rad with an aftermarket 12" Spal fan should do the job.

He also reckoned, as you mentioned Maff, that it's most likely to be the bearing/bushes in the rack not the rack itself that needs work.

Suspension wise, he recommended a simple Boge Turbo damper and 40mm springs with Polybushes throughout. MikeB accurately commented that I should do it right first time though, so maybe I'll be going for coilovers after all.

If I do go down the route of coilovers the budget will be knocked into next week. The fan, rad, hoses and bushes are around

Ok,

The standard cooling system on this should be fine if in good condition even with Stu's spirited driving so just replace thermostat, rad if necessary and a good flush like Maff says,

Find out if it is the rack or bushes causing the steering issue and fit exchange rack/uprated\bushes as neccessary.

If shocks are ok, fit quality uprated/lower springs then replace some bushes that are tired and get it aligned.

Oh and some wheels that fit lol.

Hope that helps

The 16v radiators, on some models, were the smaller type and as the racers routinely swap the 16v one for the 8v one, I'll be doing similar. The fans are always a weak spot, as identified by James Newstead and Martyn Brown so, once again, that will be changed. The thermostat is working so why swap that at all?

Steering rack bushes and bearings will be done. You noticed them in the first place Eddy ;)

Suspension..........old knackered dampers and really short springs do not match well with worn bushes and 17" wheels with suitably low profile tyres. Whether I do as Mike suggests or not hinges on a couple of phone calls between now and the weekend. In any event, the old stuff will be hauled off and the new stuff put on.

With all of this......how lovely is it to be able to renew your cooling, bushing and suspension for this sort of money? :) Try doing that with

Is there not a way of fitting studs so you could use the wheel nuts like on the Evo which have a flat washer on them?

Or is there some one you know who could machine/drill the holes so you could use tapered bolts?
Be a shame if you had to sell them as they look really good.
