Well, what a day !!!

As some of you know today was the day for my car to be mapped.

My dad and I set off at 6.30am to junction 6, the A22 to Croydon where we were meeting the chap who was mapping my car...Brian Ellis.
We set off nicely and made great time, I drove off boost to preserve a bit of fuel economy and had used about a quarter of the tank by the time it go to Stansted. So popped into the Shell and topped it up. Then it was a drive down the M11, onto the M25 and across the Dartford bridge and we arrived about 10 mins away from where we were meeting at 9:10 so we went and got a nice breakfast. A few nice cars we saw on the way included a number of Porsches eg Carreras, Boxters etc and even a couple of Astons (Why is it they are always going the other way though ?!!!?)

So we arrived about 10:15 after having breakfast at our rendezvous point, a layby off the A22 which was busy with the breakfast crowd stopped at the greasy van. Brian turned up a bit later and he proceeded to change the fuel pump to the Supra one I had purchased. This was a pretty easy job apart from the fact that he put it all back together and realised he hadnt fitted the filter sock lol, serves us right for chatting to him !!

Anyway the next job was to bolt the bracket onto the exhaust that is the probe to measure the exhaust gases. I headed round the front of the car and wandered to the back only to find my dad and Brian scratching heads because the bracket for the probe had broken !!!! This wasnt turning out to be a good day (my car is cursed.....yet another example !). Well after a lot of discusion and crazy ideas we managed to come up with 2 jubilee clips (its amazing what you find in your tool box) and a wire coat hanger to hold the probe in.

Brian then connected all the gear to the ecu and the other end of the probe and we set off. Well after about 10 mins into the drive he commented that the probe was working properly and was detecting too much oxygen. So as you can guess we headed back to the layby. We had a close look at the probe but where the bracket had broken had left a gap into the sensor.

At this point it wasnt looking good, he suggested we could pop to Abbey Motorsports and use the dyno (due to costs I wasnt keen) but thanks to Ben (and stu for ringing back later) we got the number and tried phoning. There was no answer so abandoned that idea.
Dad then suggested the metal putty to stick the bracket back on. As we had nothing to lose Brian headed off to grab some, about 15 mins later back he came and we had a go a what can only be described as a 'Heath Robinson' job and on the bracket went.

We waited about 15 mins for this to dry, in the meantime the proprieter of the greasy roadside cafe decided to come and lecture us about the layby parking policy of 2 hours and that we have severly impacted his trade by blocking spaces. We turned round and the layby was empty !!! Anyway off he popped...not a happy chap and we checked our handiwork. I did suggest Dad could go and ask if he had a bin but we thought that was pushing it lol.

Back out we went in the car and suprise suprise it actually worked !!!
Well we went on a drive and a few 3rd gear pulls which I must admit had me clenching my buttocks on a few occasions and we were done.

All the emotion and the pain of the morning was quickly forgotten and off we drove...only to be hit by the biggest traffic jam into the Dartford tunnel you could ever imagine. I distinctly remember the satnav saying 7 miles to the tunnel...thats where the jam started. Now you may know that rotaries generate extreme heat and I was panicking because the temp rose up to about 57 whilst in the queue. Luckily the tunnel came up then and we were able to have a few fast pulls with the water inj on then brought the temp straight down. Hearing the FD in the tunnel and the BOV going off is pure porn !!!

Also got stuck in traffic at Elvedon for a long time again but this seems to be the norm these days.

Anyway to conclude the mapping is done (although I had some hesitation on the way home, I suspect this is due to the car being sat in traffic for a long time and the plugs getting rich as it almost cleared up after a few blasts - will keep an eye), the car isnt as demanding on petrol as I thought, the intake temps when on the move with the vented bonnet and no water inj sat around 27 degs which is pretty good and I have learned that I need to play around with my coilovers, think the rebound is set too hard.

Overall a brilliant day but feeling bloody knackered now !!!

Sounds a ball ache.

So with you coilovers set hard does that mean you're all set for some tracktime?

About 30 mins to an hour, Brian had mapped my car previously so it was tinkering with the current map and sorting the 'fuel cells' out towards the top end of the rev range.

Apparently though I cant go anymore on current tune as I maxing out the injectors for a split second (well 97%) towards the top of the rev range eg 6400rpm. But I could have mapped for WI but wanted to keep this as a safety mod, as I tend to switch this on during pretty much all summer and when it has heatsoaked a lot this should help reduce the injector duty (apparently). I dont confess to knowing a lot about it all.

Bad news is that he still reckons it will fail an MOT with the decat and airpump switched on....think I will have to bribe Scott again.

Hmm, not sure if it is a lot quicker mate, when you do a lot of runs the initial 'omg this is quick' becomes very standard quickly. I always wanted to do enough mods for safety and a bit of power, think I am there with the car now. I even wandered back to it and loved the front and think I will keep the standard, the spoiler and the bumper have made it much harder looking without going OTT.

Who knows Ben, I think he just wanted to have a pop because we were using 'his' layby and hadnt bought anything from him. Needless to say we just ignored him....twat !!!

But yeah, I had visions of having to go back another day !!!!

Roll on the next mod....hid lighting.....driving there in the dark and back was a nightmare. Headlights on an FD are worse than rubbish !!!
Have seen some pics of an fd with them fitted and to say the difference is incredible is an understatement !! Should have come yesterday but looking like monday now.
