Driveshafts next.

With the engine in place and the dummy gearbox fitted (bare casing, but with a diff installed), I began looking at driveshaft fitment. This one has daunted me for a while, but once I tackled it, it really wasn't that bad. Not sure if I have mentioned this, but I am going for equal length shafts. I reckon this will make SUCH an improvement to the car, the extra work will be worthwhie.

I found the best combination of standard shafts to work with and finished up with a centre shaft EXACTLY the right length, without the need for any alterations. Then I set about measuring up for the length of the outer shafts, which, of course should then be equal length. The donor shafts were hollow and with the RST shafts being solid but of much smaller diameter, I was able to cut and alter the 2 halves so that one slid into the other, making a telescopic assembly.

I could then fit this to the car, get all the suspension sitting where it needs to be, then make the shaft the length it needs to be before tack welding it. Once tacked, I could put the car on the ground and operate the steering and suspension through full range of movement to check the lengths I had set. Of course, the term equal length doesn't always work out perfectly on an application like this, but I am proud to say that both my shafts are EXACTLY the same length and appear to be just right.

Here is the cut/shut shaft.......

Reckon it will handle 300+bhp? :o

No? Me either.

Seriously for a minute, you should have seen Stuart's face when I showed him that shaft and asked for his thoughts on the strength of my weld and the straightness of the shaft. One of those moments I wished I could bottle. He really did think I was going to actually run those shafts. :o :o :o

So, off to Dave Mac went the templated shaft to be remade from something a little more up to the job. I now have the finished shafts. The bill did make my arse twitch for 2 very short shafts, but I know they will be good.

In the meantime, I have cleaned and painted the rest of the parts to make up the shafts, I just need to sort out the outer ends, which are currently still fitted to the car. Then I can assemble the shafts fully, ready for fitting.

Thats all for now, but there should be significant progress in the next couple of weeks. Watch this space.

I'm enjoying reading your progress and i look forward to seeing the the car slowly come together.

Will you be using the finished Car on track or are you going to improve your top speed record?

Having seen the way you started fitting your cage, the use of those mocked up driveshafts was not such a leap of imagination

* I would add that I am a gullable chap and the mechanical merits of one welded bit of ferrous metal looks much like another (apart from the fact it was bent)

Well, for the latest installment. I've had my engine hardware back from being painted. It was full of drama, with a balls-up on some paint, but my paint-sprayer managed to recover what looked like a disaster and I am VERY pleased with the finished result. It's lovely to see the Plenum particularly in paint. I've put so so so many hours into that and it now looks absofuckinglutely awesome.

The pics really don't do it justice.

I added all those -3 ports, but due to the fact that the MAP sensor is integral in the Throttle Body, I'll not need all those ports. Maybe one or two. I can blank the rest, for future use if needed.

Here is the fuel rail. The JIC adaptors are fitted ready to take the Aeroquip lines......

....and the Rocker Cover. These pics haven't come out that nice, but be assured, the finish is flawless. I just hope I can put it all together without any damage!! I'm itching to bolt these parts on, but I know the sensible side of me should wait until I've done the rest of the heavy work......

I've had a few lazy days regarding working on the car, we've had alot on and the Clio needed a bit of work for the MOT etc, but I need to crack on with this. The next big puzzle is the Clutch. Maybe I am thinking about it too hard, but I am planning on running a 2.0 Zetec Flywheel and a 240mm Clutch, but with cable operation (most of the cars that ran 240mm Clutches had hydraulic operation as far as I know). I'm not really sure what clutch to buy. I really want a Paddle, as I plan to launch, but it doesn't need to be very fierce. Answers on a postcard! It holds the key to significant progress!!

That's all for now. What do you think?

They look awesome mate

With reference to a clutch I have been looking at these. Mainly because they give a bhp and torque rating for their clutches, so when we break one we've got a case to argue for a replacement  and they're reasonably priced.

To be perfectly honest with you, even if my lawnmower had a clutch, I wouldn't fit a Techniclutch. You should see the way they are spoken about over on Passionford. :o
