Right , the time came yesterday to sron the car , i have a few of track days booked and want to do alot include fitting the engine , and i just wont have the time to drive it so may aswell sorn it and cash the tax in :(

But do not fear it is only temporary until the engine is in but before the engine goes in i am hoping to mcontinue the track day theme , do the following ,

Remove interior carpets and remove all sound deadening underneath - Re fit carpets and front two vaders - yes they are heavy but i like them

Reduce any other un necercary weight - ie remove fog lights fit blanking plates etc

trail run my yokahamma SLICKS    on see if they clear the strut / arch

get ready for the first track day at marham in october , so i have a little while yet as its on the 12th but i dont sadlly think the engine will be in by then as i think my friend can help in the middle of october only , which is no problem maybe really. But it may be in you never know

any way let me know what you think about these ideas and any other weight saving tips or tricks you know of

Or even if you think things like sound deadening and fog light removal is not worth it

let me know

cheers

Any amount of weight reduction is worthwhile, but the value of your efforts is down to personal preference.

In my eyes to remove the sound proofing (matting and bitumen based material 'stuck' to the steel of the floorpan) is very worthwhile but to stick the carpet back over it........ in this area I think you need to choose what you want. A hard core track car or a comfortable, refined, great daily driver that can also be thrown around a circuit now and again.

As for the seats; as above

The fog lights; hoof them out but run ducting to the brakes instead of blanking them off. The e36 is a heavy old bus, some heavier than others ;) , so helping the brakes stay cool has got to be good

I would advise the following, all based on years of sodding around with cars and often without direction or guidance and therefore wasting thousands.

Leave your car entirely as is for now.

Have a look at some of the cars at the meet on the 10th. Talk to the owners and evalaute the merits of their mods

Once you've seen the cars and maybe been out as a passenger in a few, you should be in a better, more informed position to make your mind up about the work that suits you. Other peoples opinions are fine, but you'll feel so much happier when you have a clear goal of what you want to acheive and a plan as to how you'll get there :thumb:

As Stuart says. Also, I assume the engine currently in the car is working OK so why go to the hassle of changing it now, regardless of the fact you bought the new one? May as well abuse the current engine and get some life out of it and keep any money that you were going to spend fitting the new one for trackdays or further prep e.g. seats, better dampers or coilovers. Do you have proper brake pads?

Re weight saving, since you're not doing a full strip you could do things like change the exhaust, remove the sunroof, polycarb rear windows, plastic bonnet and boot.

beware of the dreaded project creep  you can so easily get sucked into trying to make the perfect track car that
you will never get finished . always set yourself a target of jobs to do that can be done on budget and within a set time.
i usually try to have the car a week away from running at any one time ( except for the moment but this is an exception to the rule 8) ) i personally think it is better to evolve with the car at a steady pace of driving and modifications

i agree with tommy thrash the existing engine and keep the other as spare , this will all become apparent on wednesday

cheers
