E30 318 'Ring project car- down not out.....260708

Post by Rob S »

As some of you guys may know, we suffered a bit of a disaster recently, but more of that to follow.

The day before the MOT, we put in about 45 hours work between us, and finished the mechanicals and body work on the car..

with plenty of this in between

with minor tarting up by me

Ultra Racing braces (Thanks to Automac)

New Toyos

and after more than 16 hours on the car

We'd got to this

The following, with much trepidation, Nigel drove the car to the MOT

And having succesfully completing the test, this happened................. :o

Causing this

Gutted does nt even come close.

So, rather than give up, we spent Friday sourcing another lump, and today we removed this rather dirty looking E30 lump out of an 92 Auto Cabrio, so hopefully it'll last longer than old one.

So i guess that'll be this week spent mucking around with the car again, oh the wife will be pleased!

Nice car mate, great pics and write up.
I also had an BMW before I bought the Subaru and had troubles with the engine. Then I installed with a friend a turbo on it.

So keep going, love the E30
...and sorry for my english, i am from austria, thank you.

Well todays been a good day!

Got to Nigels to find him a Lee already hard at work, gave them a Red Bull and then watched in amusement as they started feeling the benefit and working like lunatics!
After a flurry of activity we got to this....

Image

With our "new" lump was in, with our Kent cam in place, and because I am sad, i got the other stuff on double quick so i could get the Strut Brace back on

Image

So the next hour or so was spent reconnecting and checking and double checking everything.

There was the moment of truth a short while later, and it started first time, with no pops or farts, and it settled quickly down, responding briskly to throttle inputs. It even sounded better than the first engine, and seemed smoother. Coming off the throttle abrubtly and letting the revs fall to idle causes a brief dip below idle, but it quickly comes back up. This seems to be caused by the uprated Cam, it pulls well enough.

In a moment of silliness,
we forgot the IS spoiler was fitted after we had it up on the ramps, and when the came off the ramps, there was a horrible crunch. It could be the impecable german build quality, or the layers of paint that held it together, but it went back on ok!

Image

So it was test driven, and it pulled nicely and handled well, being controlled in its stance and balance. Braking has revealed the rears are a little keen, but this should improve with some weighting, and there is an annoying clicking on left lock, which is a bit of a bugger seeing as we've just fitted new wheel bearings from GSF.

Image

The next time hopefully i'll be posting is so i can show you the graphics, the rear spoiler fitted ( and bonnet before someone chimes in!), and us heading to the 'Ring!

PS Nigel and his brother Lee are due to test drive the car again tonight, probably sideways and at speed knowing them- be careful boys, don't go braking anything!!!

Please!

That was quick work mate. Well done. What was the cause of the valve to hit the piston? Did the cambelt slip?

The car looks great and cant wait to see it all finished

@Madden,
No idea unfortunately!
We are hoping its just bad luck and an old weakened valve, but to be honest I've no real idea.
The insurance issue aside, the trip now looks likes it's on!
