Escort Cosworth ownership

Post by Redkop »

I can only say how much I have enjoyed it. It was well worth the 9 year wait, dreaming of owning one, it was every bit what I expected from first seeing the promotional video of it on TV. Prices were always too high and out of my reach until July 2000 when I saw one advertised at a localish garage to me for about

Great cars, a friend of mine bought one brand new, the original big turbo model and built a garage especially to keep it in :o

To have owned yours for 6 1/2 years is some achievement too 8)

Yes I have had the Evo since the beginning of February this year and no I won't be keeping the Escort. I find I am using the Evo more and more and the poor Escort stays in the garage, hardly used at all.

I have always like Evos, but never enough to sell the Escort for one. In Feburary this year, I came into some money, so decided to buy an Evo VIII. I didn't realise I would like the Evo as much as I do, so after a lot of deep thinking, I have decided to sell the Escort as it's wasted not being used :(

How have you been finging the car in comparising to the Escort?

They are completely different, the Escort is much more a 'driver's' car and a bit lardy & heavy in handling compared to the Evo, maybe having 18" wheels on it makes it not so easy to handle. Having 70 - 80bhp more it makes the mid to top end range power feel like you're getting much more of a buzz than in the Evo. With all the technology on an Evo, it makes it an awesome car for handling, just point it at a corner and around it goes, like on rails. I much prefer the close ratio 6 gears on the Evo than the long reach 5 gears on the Escort. The Evo clutch is much lighter than the juddery Alcon 6 paddle clutch.

Petrol consumption is far better with the Evo, on a run I can do 290 miles on a full tank [55 litres] and I'm lucky if I get 200 on a full tank [65 litres] from the Escort. The Recaro seats in the Evo are better. I didn't like not having a boost gauge when I got the Evo, but soon amended that.

The Evo seems to reach top speeds so much smoother and effortlessly than the Escort, whether that is because it doesn't have the turbo chatter the Escort does when on boost and changing gear - who knows. :?

I have started to mod the Evo in preparation for having Autronic fitted when the Escort is sold, so far an HKS exhaust, Magnex downpipe [de-catted], uprated fuel pump, Alcon 6 - pot brakes, Denso plugs etc.

Sounding good. As you said, with the lack of power in comparising to the Escort it's going to feel a little more sluggish at the top end of the rev range. However, on that note, peak power on the Evo is around 6,800, which once the Autronics is fitted will feel much stronger :-D

With regards to the handling, if you are looking for a bit more of a positive/driver feel, sway bar and springs/coilovers will totally change the car.

Keep us posted
