Mapping on Rolling Road - Any tips for a first timer?

Post by TonyB »

As you guys know I am new to mapping. Take a look at the garage for full specs of my car.

I have now booked in at a RR for a 2-3 hour session.

This is my first time mapping a car, managed a safe map <3500rpm and 9psi so far, first time mapping on a RR. I have been reading and reading - forums, web, and books - taking me to a confused state and back again. I am now starting to feel a little nervous,,,, so any help (general or specific) is appreciated - even if you think it is obvious :)

Cheers,

have you logged an equivalent power run on the road with AFR's etc?

I have not mapped any further yet. Saving that for the RR.

Come on Scott. The extent of your mapping knowledge is pretty comprehensive and that's the sum of your input? I know there's no such thing as a free lunch but you could be a little more informative if you're going to post at all :)

LOL !!

Sorry I have been really busy the last couple of weeks. My car is off the road and my kart arrives next week.

To start with make sure all the equipment works correctly and that you can down load logs to replay later.

If possible get a egt gauge which will log as well.

You will need a safe timing map before you start to map. This is very important. I would usually take a few deg's off what is the best tune for the same engine to start with.

Also make sure you have no exhaust leaks.

Is you car MAP or MAF based. What EMS do you use ??

main points will be.

What afr do i want to run at idle
What afr do i want to run on cruising
What afr do i want at peak TQ

How much timing do i want to run at peak tq

There are loads of differant ways to design a fuel map or a timing map. They all have differant out comes.

IT is important to understand certain things.

ie
what det is
What is Peak tq and how will i reckognise it
what happens before during and after peak tq

If you run a map based system and can directly manipulate the injector on time ( m/s ) you may want to know what is the max amount of on time per injector.

ie the faster the engine revs the less time you have in which to add fuel.

I run my car up the 1.2 bar with 400 hp whilst mapping on the road.

Always try and tune on the same streach of road and in the same direction as the loads and load points may alter on a differant road.

Later on when you are altering for best tune you may need to use a steep hill and the brakes to load the car up

ie get the car into the load point and apply the breaks to keep it there. This will heat the brakes up a lot but will garantee you safty in the map at the points you test.

I see your ecu is MAP based. Will it inport into excel. CSV format i believe ?

This could save you loads of time

also does it work like a power fc ie injector map and a corretcion map ?
