use a bootable linux, like knoppix to boot and save data to CDRW or failing that fix the laptop, if its booting in safe mode hopefully it can be recovered with minimal fuss...

did you install anything since the last switch-on or has anything changed, just trying to build a picture of where the problem lies.

Did you have the macines networked - if so you can still boot in safe mode with network capability - copy everything onto your sons machine.
Additionally, it would seem if you can boot in save mode than it's not so serious.
What happens when you boot normally - dll errors?, locks up?, what actually happens[/u]

well last night I turned off the laptop as per normal after normal inetrnet surfing and general file opening and closing. Woke up this morning and she wouldn`t boot just gotthe black screen with safe mode option. I am not connected to my son`s machine apart from we use the same router for internet. Not very program minded so any advice, treat me like a 5 year old.

As you have a router, you should be able to copy your data over the network to your son's pc. Just create a share on your son's pc and copy the data there...
Boot up laptop in safe mode with networking and copy data to \\Son's pc name\share name

Have you actually tried booting your PC in normal mode?
As to creating the share - simply boot it in safemode - right click and share which ever drive your docs are on.
However you may need to create a network etc ...
Control panel, networks - then use the local area network wizard.

Tried the normal mode and the cycle was repeated.
