Personally i got into the sport a year ago and am a long way from D1 or being good.
So far i've been to 10-15 practice days, finished 4th in a round of eurodrfit at Lydd in the clubman class and also finished 4th in a display comp at snetterton.

Just thought i'd try and add a bit to the drifting section with my half arsed guide to people wanting to get into what is a very new sport.

First you'll need a rwd car and crash helmet, to start off with that is all thats importent (don't worry about diffs, suspension etc).
Then goto a practice day such as the ones run by http://www.driftuk.co.uk if your very confident in you ability and have ago, if your less confident with the basic drifting straight off go for a course with http://www.driftskool.co.uk/
Now you've tried it, you know you like it so now is the time for basic mods or more depending upon your budget 8)

In order these are what i'd class as the best started mods.

A car that your not to worried about damaging and can afford to fix, think about your budget you may beable to afford a fifteen grand 500bhp supra but can you afford to keep it running in the harsh enviroment of drifting? day to day and year after year?

A 2 way diff will set you back around 500-600 pounds or a welded diff for around 50-100.
spare wheels and tyres (you'll go through alot of tyres) :)
Coilovers or uprated shocks and springs whilst you save for coilovers.
A bucket seat and harness (you'll be amazed how much you are thrown about inside the car).
All other suspension arms, adjustable front top mounts for the coilovers and setup.

By the time you get to this stage this guide will be well beyond you 8) 8)

Hope this is of some help to someone.

Good man drift school is great :) drifting as a whole gives you alot of knowledge of car control even if you don't want to go into it as a sport.

What cars do you recommend for drifting mate ?

200sx seems to be everyones fave, prices of them seem to be soaring at the mo. Although the AE86 Corolla seems to be even worse, there was one on Newera not long ago for about 6k !!!

Personally i'd go for an s13 200sx since parts and performance parts are plentifull and with all the easy engine swap options you could go from buying the same car for

I think you hit the nail on the head here, money is everything and if you can afford to damage your car in the first place.

Nice one !!

I would also add that people should beware just buying any 200sx they see thats advertised as "Drift ready" or a "Drift car"

If this is te case then it might be that its had a major caning and perhaps is being sold for a reason, or its more likely the usual bunch of bandwaggon jumpers who are now doing to 200sx's as they did with corrollas and just make money out of it.

Practice days are excellent as coned courses hurt much less than kurbs, but if you have to do street then please do it in places that are semi sensible like industrial estates late at night :D where theres less to hit or annoy.

If you're on a mega-tight budget, you could do worse than check out the Tramp Drift boys - they'll help you get drifting for pennies :D
