Guess it depends whether you want Saloon or Wagon / Estate mate. If you want an Estate you'll only have WRX options on anything later than a bugeye but STI on earlier.
If you are looking for the saloon then I guess it depends on your budget mate. The classics seem to be the same price as older bugeye models and although most of the guys will hate me for saying this now they do look dated. The only exception being the Type R, P1 or the 22b 2 door versions which still look fresher.
The bugeye versions seem pretty cheap although the front isnt appreciated by everyone. Then I guess it leaves the blob eye or the hawkeye but again depends on budget.
An STI has a better spec as standard than a WRX although you can get the Prodrive pack which boosts the horsepower up (remap and exhaust) but you are missing the better intercooler, suspension etc.
Guess it depends on budget mainly mate and what you want to use it for. I have also been looking at the WRX Wagons as its a great car for carrying loads of stuff (fishing in my case) but also enough power (especially with the remap) to have fun in.
There are thousands out there to suit all budgets inc some highish milers for some amazing prices for not that older cars. I would say the WRX Wagons are less likely to be thrashed than the STIs.
If you want an STI though personally I would go for the more modern shapes than the older ones, unless its an import as the rust will be bad especially when driven by rally wannabes
Just my 2p mate and thats only by reading and reading and chatting to people. Give Dunc a shout on Facebook as he tunes them now but obviously the other guys on here. Wasnt a nice one being sold on here ?

Oh and there are very very rare STI versions of the bugeye wagons which look ace but are certainly high prices secondhand.

In my opinion Dan, your answer to the question will depend massively on what you want to use it for and how much you have to spend.
If one were to estimate your approximate usage as being fast road, occasional auto test and quarter mile frolic, and also that you were to spend less than

Now that's the sort of response I was after.

For me personally it would have to be (and only be) a late series 'classic' shape, as they only really do it for me than the later revisions. And it will have to be a wagon too.

So realistically I'll be looking for a WRX wagon but if I can find a non abused STi that would overall be a better vehicle.

Don't even bother considering a newage WRX in any guise, the running gear on a STi is so so much stronger. The Bugeye STi's (although not to everyones taste) are starting to command strong money and dare I say it are becoming quite desirable.
edit
just seen your reply so ignore the above.

I too used to much prefer the later spec classic version 3 onwards but I just had to have an older one (version 2) this time
Iv owned a version 2 a v3 a v4 and now another v2
Ones I'v had have been
Wrx, Wrx sti, uk turbo 2000 and Wrx ra
The uk 2000 was still a good car but lacking an LSD and box was long ratios
I'd go for an sti personally but more on insurance and although have forged pistons to do hear a lot of them expire.
Ultimate impreza for me apart from 22b would be a version 2 sti ra
