am I mad? thinking about buying a "classic"

Post by Monster »

This is an itch i've been avoiding scratching for a while (and probably too long looking at what prices are doing) but I've got a massive urge to buy a "classic" but usable car

Having spent most of tonight scouring ads and buying guides i though i'd post this.

So, I really fancy a 70s/80s 911 Turbo (930) or Merc SL (107). Mainly because I like them and like the thought of going for a blat (in the case of the widow maker) or a cruise with the top down ( a la Bobby Ewing - Merc) but also as a potential investment, or at least a way of not shedding bucket loads of dough like in all my other "rides" :toetap05:

I realise of course that this is a minefield of unexpected costs that even my R32 may struggle to match (well maybe that's an exaggeration as bonfires fuelled by

Have owned a R129 SL and loved it, and lusted after a 930 but warned away from them due to 'feeling really old fashioned'. Make of that what you will.

Investments like these are known as 'tangibles' and the right car with the right spec and provenance could be a really good bet. Ideal really; something great to look at, wonderful to drive AND hold or better your money? I take it your new place will have several garages then? ;)

PS- currently looking at either an old Mercedes again or a 944 Porsche! (Russ hates 944's by the way...........)

Just research you understand as I am enjoying no work far too much to have to earn money for a bloody car! :)

TBH Gareth with the GTR I'm not looking for something fast as not much will seem it in comparison. More something I can use away from the track when I want some car fun - the GTR is way too stiff for back roads.

The Porker 930 is still a quick car - 1977 Motor Mag timed it at 5.1 secs 0-60 and 12.3 0-100 which aint too shabby even today.

But as I say, thats not the point with this car, more a bit of fun

American Muscle appeals massively, I looooooove Pete's Camaro, but this has to be something a bit depreciation proof and i don't know much about muscle cars as I don't read up on them. Perhaps i should....good thought

Exactly! I'm not worried about it feeling old fashioned as i'm not buying it as a driving tool (he says - see you at snett in the old timer...).

The problem is finding the right car and not buying the shiny one as usual :sifone:

That will kill some hours.

I found a truly gorgeous black 300sl earlier today with full history, hard top, full cream leather, new conti tyres all around........I can't repeat the price on here, but I seem to remember spending the same amount in two nights in Vegas a few years ago. Gulp!

Mate, where do you think I've been for the last few hours :D

Its tricky to know whether to pay strong money from one of the respected specialists or take a punt with a private.

As for Vegas, what's spent in Vegas, stays in Vegas....literally :smilielol5:
