Evening Since nearly everyone on here has owned a golf at some point i'm wondering if you can dispense some words of wisdom about owning one, be it costs, replacement parts, insurance, things to look out for etc. plan is, i'm selling the car (as we all know) and buying a 4x4 for the winter months and exploring. Then have a cheap GTI in the garage as a winter project ready to run around in the spring/summer after i've been to aus. So it would be a good 6 months project at least.

Also anyone know where the best places are to look for a cheap GTI when the time arrives?

parts = peanuts (plus a million and one people have and are breaking them and the added bonus some parts from mk1/mk2/mk3/mk4/corrado etc.... are interchangable

insurance is cheap as chips - classic insurance

easy to work on

there usually pretty solid but gti's can suffer on the arches mainly under the plastic arch trims and under the filler cap

four doors are seriously cheap compared to the 2 door for obvious reasons
and best to look for one on the millions of vag forums there are around or the usual places like ebay/gumtree/pistonheads etc..

I guess Ben could give you some pointers mate as he owns one now.....I personally have never owned one but have driven plenty of them and I think there a cracking car....depending on what you want to spend and use the car for have a look on pistonheads also under the track day cars section I was looking today and there are some littles gems on there.....

Dan, whats the point in a winter project ? Save your pennies and just buy one when the time is right as you'll have more money and therefore get a better one rather than rushing out and buying some old rot box because its cheap and then spending money putting it right rather than buying the best you can afford.

However I would be saving as much money to use when in Aus than blowing it on cars now. You will have a 4X4 so its not like you wont have a car when you are back.

Fair view Gareth, however i wouldn't be buying a total heap of crap it would be a decent golf that would need a a bit of 'tarting' up. The project wouldn't be a very active one like being in the garage every weekend. Just something to tinker with and get it nice and presentable for play time next year. The money to buy the car outright wouldn't come from the car sale proceeds. Instead the remainder of the money will be put straight into my aus fund which will leave me with easily enough money to pay for a flight and at least a week and half over there (only going for 3 weeks) I do understand what you are saying and it does make sense. But like they say, the devil makes work for idle thumbs i have to be doing something.
