HID light conversion

Hi guys, now i know some of you are running HID lights in your cars (Gareths RX7 comes to mind straight away ) basically i want to know;

a. is it safe to fit the conversion to pop up lights, e.g. is it going to melt the plastic? because i really dont know much about these

b. is it okay to buy ebay kits? or is there a particular place that you can get HIDs from that are a good quality.

c. are they really plug and play as people say? or is there still a little bit of wiring to do?

I bought my kit from Bren @ Apex Performance. Cheap and 100% plug and play from memory. I can't see why they wouldn't be safe given the number of them that he sells to S13 owners

a) will be fine with pop up lights

b) i bought a cheap kit for ebay for my 200sx(genuine bosch kit hahahah) worked spot on..and replacement ballasts are cheap as chips too incase u need them)

c) pretty much plug and play...a few things to mod etc..but nothing difficult at all

You need to ensure you get the correct bulb type kit, for obvious reasons. Those are H2 but a quick search for your car comes back H4. H4 have the dual high and dip in the one bulb so the kitis are expensie than single bulb replacements. H4 kit have a tilting shield mechanism that creates the dipped effect.

Don't know whether they're suitable for pop ups but don't see why not other than the wiring may suffer from the continual flexing. Has no one on the MR2 forum done this?. iirc wiring is pretty straightforward and uses the OE bulb socket for its feed.

Your OE wiring will not be a problem as the HID draws less current.

Another thing to consider is the light temperature. Don't go for the, in your case, colour co-ordinated blue end of the range. The white scale gives far better illumination. Unless of course, they are for bling value over practicality.

okay cheers for that guys fair point about the H4s Gerry i over looked that, now ive got a post it note on my screen to remind me and yes i want to see where im going rather than looking pimp .

Ive had them in my 200SX, the Golf and the Integra. Easy to fit.

Managed to get the same kit that they sell over here for some ridiculous price from China for 1/4 of the price.

Ive got a brand new set of H4 Hids that we got for Charleys landrover if you want them but she needs a high/low bulb not just a dipped bulb

Ive got them in the 200, simple plug and play. 6000k is just slightly the blue side of white.
5200k is pure white, less is more orange, more is more blue.

Just remember, legally, in order to fit them you must have both headlamp washers and either self levelling lights or self levelling suspension, missing these wont fail your MOT, but you beam pattern still has to be good, or that will fail.
