Bramley Lakes (Learning and development centre)

I have spent the day there with some of my new colleagues from Aviva (Norwich Union)

What a giggle. Essentially, we were there to be assessed on our individual strengths and weaknesses across a broad range of problem solving and physical challenges. The participants would each take a turn leading an exercise and the assessors (4 in total, 2 from Aviva and 2 from the centre) were the observing our actions, the roles that we played and obviously what we were good and bad at, and the subsequent areas of development.

This was all wrapped up in larking around on assault courses, collaboratively solving fiendish Crystal Maze style puzzles and even a spot of archery. By the way, I am officially awesome with a bow and arrow (must have been all of the Call of Duty)

I guess the reason for this post is simple. If you get the opportunity to take part in this sort of thing (they also do team building) make every effort to do so. It is so rewarding, huge fun and the feedback (I am assured) is amongst the most powerful and insightful that you can receive. I'll find out in a few days as to how I got on and where I need to develop my skills. If you are an employer or Director looking for an excellent way of assessing staff (existing or candidates for a new role) or improving teams, I can think of no better way of doing it.

Anyone at Aviva reading this; get involved! You will love it.

Yep, done this in my former life at NU - great fun and really useful if you've got the right instructors to give proper constructive feedback and not make it just a jolly.

Glad you enjoyed it mate.

Cheers,
Alex

My back hurts, my shoulders hurt and my triceps feel like they are going to fall off :)

One of the objectives we had to complete was to get 8 members of the team through 'The Spiders Web'. This was a 7'x6' wooden framed matrix of elastic strips that were arranged so that it was all random. The team had to go through the web without touching the webbing :o

Lifting a couple of young ladies up high enough to pass them through was quite hard on the upper body

Nick, yeah not long been there. I'm looking after a small team of guys at their call centre at Broadland. My better half has been there since November and so far, we both getting on really well.

Gareth, get along there if you have the chance. You'll have great fun and learn a great deal about how you work in unusual situations (like a trackday ;) )

I have to say NU Aviva spend quite a lot of effort on training of this type.
Cath has done several from team days like Stus to the biggest one they do!!
3 weeks in Africa on Project Raleigh where you build the adventure play ground for those less fortunate than our selves.
