i had to make a claim on my insurance, but insurance comp said it might be a wright off, as they have valued my car at a very low price to what it is worth

You can appeal against any decision made by them to the same ombudsman.
A problem some encounter is that at quote time they say"It's worth 5 grand" then mod/improve it, but forget to change it's valuation.
As long as they are supplied proof/evidence of the cars value, you stand a pretty good chance of negotiating on the value.
Good luck anyway.
PS Is it your Subaru?

Never accept an insurance company's first offer, they will always increase it. However they will probably use Glass's Guide in their valuation with allowances or penalties for under or over book mileage. If your car is in standard spec. you should be offered the retail price, not a trade price as I have come across over the years. With the settlement offered you should be able to replace the car with a similar model in the same condition from a garage and not private. It is worthwhile submitting ads as proof of the going rate if a dispute continues. If the vehicle has been modified in any way since the original quote and you have not notified them you could have a major problem.

Ian,
I had problems years ago with my first Pulsar. I had to take the insurance company to court in the end. Hope you get it sorted.
