Sloooooooooow Internet

Post by rolty »

Hi guys, hopefully you can help.

The last few days my broadband has been painfully slow, pages taking ages to load and videos buffering for an age only to play about 5 secs. Usually this would be rectified by just resetting the router, but it doesn't seem to be playing ball. I recently upgraded to Firefox 3
but I doubt that's the issue?

Any ideas as to why it's o slow and how to sort it?

Cheers

Do you download much? Could be a bandwidth throttle if you have passed what they consider to be a 'fair usage'. ;)

I would try resetting/rebooting the modem not the router if seperate but yours may be an alll in one Modem/Router in which case what you've already done is fine. I do that myself once a week to refresh the connection but i have a seperate modem and router/firewall.

Once it's running a bit quicker do a bandwidth test and see if you are getting whatever it is you signed up for.

http://www.speedtest.net/ Use this site as it's very good and reasonably accurate.

If no joy then it will be your ISP (internet service provider) that has the problem or you are being throttled as has already been said. In which case call them up and ask them why you are being throttled as you have every right to know why.

If this continues long term find another provider. If you got the talk talk free then you have little right to complain about anything , so i would find a provider that charges so you get every right to complain. I use cable and so far barring one or two past issues it's pretty good at 20Mb. It's not cheap but it is relaible and quick!!

I've never had any problems before the last few days, and although I download a bit of stuff, I'd never be near the 'unlimited' limit.

Maybe there's some work being done on the lines as there have been loads of BT vans around town this week.

You should be able to get onto their website and check server status to make sure they are running 100%. Equally you could set your mind at rest and call them up to find out if there are any internet works/exchange upgrades going on around your location. they may be able to shed light on your slow connection.

Stop downloading your porn the same time as trying to surf !!!!!!!!!!

Would agree with Francis response, that is the usual method to go.
