Just built a car trailer.

Post by 323ian »

Just to let everyone know that me and a friend have just built a really good car trailer equipt with a inertia hitch, twin axles, brakes and full lighting with out rigger lights and the works.
We have built some ramps which will cope with low cars ok.
My freind has a Land Rover Discovery what we have been towing it with and we would be interested in doing some work for people if they ever needed a trailer for the day.
May be interested in lending it out for the day be would have to be discussed.

Just a quick couple of pictures while we was building it;

Here it is loaded with 2 tonnes to test it;

Ian

If you and your mate want a trade account, let me know :D

You'll need mud guards on there or that isn't road legal.

It has mudguards now this was a very early build picture.
Full mudguards and built in lights etc, will get some finshed pics up, was just seeing what kind of interest it would get.
It is painted and everything now.

Have you checked it for towing weights,

Is there some kind of safety test for trailers ??

How much does it weigh - as this will affect what can pull it.

i think that as long as it is your car on the trailer :wink: you will be ok but i am led to believe if it is for hire and reward

the towing vehicle needs to be fitted with a tacho.

cheers

also while i think of it check the insurance implications ie the towing vehicle may be covered to tow a trailer but

have you "goods in transit cover " which covers what is on the trailer . i'm not trying to be a kiljoy , i just don't want

someone to have an accident with a 20k car on the trailer with no cover . it's only a phone call to your insurance company

after all , and trust me accidents do and will happen i have had one ifor williams written off and i know of a few more incidents aswell :roll:

cheers

jason

ps perhaps we should have a sticky on trailer towing and the law or is that too caravan club :?:

Crikey didnt know this was so involved!!
It does not need a tacho as it does not go over the weight which it would need one.
There is no tests needed for a trailer and this is more than roadworthy of most trailers i have seen built.
What do you mean plating?

Did not know about all insurance implications really, if its more hassle than its worth then i will just use it for our own personal stuff.

Good idea about the sticky on towing laws, im so lots of us do it on here so great idea.
I cant tow shit all as im under the age to have it on my licence but i am hopefully getting my HGV licence upgraded in the future so will get it then.
