Tracktoy thoughts and suggestions?

Having hooned my ATR round the track last weekend, I'm coming round to the following way of thinking:
Firstly, replace the ATR with a normal family car and
Secondly, go halves with my friend on a road legal track toy
The track toy must have:
1. 4WD or RWD
2. Around classic STi performance or more (obviously!)
The car will be stripped and caged at least. Brakes and suspension then engine can be done at a later stage if required. I would hope that a stripped car will be fine on standard calipers and suspension in the first instance.
The budget is

Evo V Rs would be what i would gamble on but ian slightly biased it meets your requirements out of the box

go BMW e30 or e36 - Matt and James were having a ball today and you would have change for a trailer and a whole years track day fees :thumb:

For that budget you could have you could have a sierra xr4x4. DON'T LAUGH...
Scorpio cosworth 24v engine
Single turbo..or
twin turbo.....or
supercharged
Running anything from 200 - 450+ (bhp)

Others could be:
Mark 4 Supra
Nissan 350z
200sx (with plenty of mods !)
RX7 (nice single turbo)
I'd go with the E36 BM or a 32 GTR.

I won't laugh, but I will discount it from the options mainly because I have a sneaky feeling its upkeep (cost AND garage time) might be more involved than say the E36 M3.
Re Dynamix's suggestions, I think the E30 M3 would be the one to go for but it's at a price premium therefore I'd rather go with the E36 M3 with mods.
Supra? A bit heavy and cruiser for tracktoy perhaps?
RX7 - I considered this and could possibly bring it back into the equation. I just don't like the fact that they need rebuilds more often than a Scoob!

how about looking at the track toys from the other end?
ie. front wheel drive?
Lee's AX today was awesome, lots of good Mk2 gti's around, 205 GTi's will lap all day as give more bigger power cars a run for their money.

Its true they are heavy but I'd have thought the Supra is a bit like the Skyline and unlock a very good amount of power with just light mods eg breathing and full exhaust. Gotta be quick out there on the track though.

Again true but if you buy a car that has been tuned correctly and dont tinker (lol as if) then it will be fine. Rebuild is cheaper on an FD than a Scooby or a Skyline.
I know you said 4WD or RWD but what about an Integra Type R ? The car participating in the Time Attack this year set some extremely good times at the tracks.
