That sounds odd, who is delivering it? If sent by EMS it will be Parcel Farce, they send a letter in advance, you pay, they deliver the parcel. Others such as Fedex deliver and then invoice you the costs :)

I couldn't really make out what they were saying.

So not sure who it was.

When I ordered something from the US it was delivered to my local parcel force depot in the city near Halfords and I got a note through the door saying that I'd have to pay

Do you know what courier was used to send it? Have you got a tracking number?

I've imported a few things and never paid before delivery. Duty and VAT are paid by the delivery company and then reclaimed from you at point of delivery or, as said above invoiced after.

If the guy was unintelligible then it's probably genuine  :D

But seriously, it does sound like a scam and FWIW, I wouldn't go along with it.

I received this from the IT dept at work this morning...

The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam:

A card is posted through your door
from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were
unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a
premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam
originating from Belize.

If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will
already have been billed

That sounds a slightly different scam.

I called Customs and Excise and they said it all sounds a bit odd. My best bet is to sit and old tight, either wait for a parcel to arrive or another phone call taking more info.
