sold me ITR as tbh it was to boring and then went out and had a drive of my mates R33 GTR which although being very nice just didnt excite me that much. Theres not many Jap cars that take my fancy anymore execpt the RX7 which has allways interested me.
Well what can i say, asked my mate if he would take me out in his RX7 Type R, and he said come on lets go as he had just got back in.
We just went a few miles outside of camp instead of using the airfield as it's usless as you cant judge speed as its so open.
First thing is as i get in the passenger seat all the way back my knees still touch the dash board. Theres no chance i could drive it well not comfortably without solidly mounting the seat to the floor and as far back as it would go
The next thing you notice is the noise with popping and banging on over run The ride is firm but not to hard even for our roads using RE01 tyres.
Tosh guns it down the first straight which is a little bumpy but is still nice and planted. Power delivery is stupidly smooth but with plenty of kick, it just wants to keep pulling aswell.
As for cornering we Tosh didnt push it to much as you cant see over the hedges at whats coming, you can tell its a very good chassis even in standard form. One the way back we could see around one of the second gear bends so Tosh had a play. The car steps out in such a way thats very smooth and not to difficult to control either.
Managed to open it up on the straight back into camp and the arse dyno recons about 350bhp Tosh plans to do a few mods to it and is hoping to see around the 400bhp mark
I was very impressed and if i was to even go back to a jap car an RX7 is now top of my list, even if i have to adjust the seating position a little.
Sorry if its a little bit of a boring read for some of you but just thought it would be nice to share the experience.
P.S. Whats ecu do most RX7 owners change to when they are going for more power? Oh and you are a lucky bunch.
Found a Jap car i really like
Nice to see another RX7 fan !!!
I am by no means a specialist on the car....Scott (sdminus) and Ollie (Borque) are though.
First off the ecu has to be an Apexi Power FC and worth doing as a first mod..the standard ecu cant cope with more than a couple of changes eg exhaust back box, induction kit and runs the engine lean....not good on a rotary !!!
Be interested to hear what mods your mate has and whether it is a single turbo or a twin ? Mine is running twins with increased boost and made 326 bhp at the dyno the other week.....although it is running a bit lean...
The one piece of advise I will give you though if you are serious about getting one.......dont buy a cheap one !!!!!!! It will cost you as much to get it up to par !! Although engine rebuilds are cheaper compared to Skybuses, Scoobies, Supras etc you dont wanna have to fork out on them too often.
Pop along to the June meet as I will be in mine and Ollie in his.
As for the seats....this is a common issue and I will struggle to put a helmet on without the seat being tilted a long way back.....but you can but Bride aftermarket seats that come with lower seat rails.
We need more RX7s on this forum as there is a bias towards Skylines, Scoobs, 200sx's and Evos at the mo !!!

I said to him the ECu to go for would probably be Apexi Power FC but said i would ask some people who know a little more about it.
I think you have probably already seen my mates RX7[Green] as he came down to the Snetty meet a few months ago just after he had go it.
The car is a twin turbo and has an exhaust fitted. It might not be 350bhp but it pulls very nice and so smooth that might be whats giving the impression. What Boost do you run on yours for 326bhp?
i love my Turbo taxi to much to swap, if i was even move away from the blue oval then i would have to look at one of these.

I think 350 bhp is too high for the mods he has.
An exhaust (if it downpipe, decat and backbox) only frees up about 30 bhp, the standard car is about 265bhp.
I do remember him, it was a nice looking car.
If you look under my 'otter' pic there is a link for '1993 Mazda RX-7' if you click that it takes you to my garage where all the mods are on there.
Your Ford Taxi is really nice looking, I especially like the all white theme going on.

Ah, thats a shame then plus my other stuff is in 'Members rides'.
In response to your boost question.....it is running 0.9 bar. The stock is about 0.7. You cant really go over 0.9 with the stock twins as they get extremely hot and you really need water injection to run it over this. I have WI but wanted the car to push a bit more horsepower but run safely.
The simple answer is if you want big horsepower you need a single turbo kit and all the associated mods that go with it.
