Cheapish trackday car, ideas??

Only had the Z4 Coupe couple of months so can't bring myself to track it (and it's on PCP). So............
Ideas for a cheap trackday car for fun :D
Early days and not ready to plash out yet but no harm in getting some ideas and do some research, would like something with a bit of grunt. What do you think would be a good bet with 5-6k to spend:?:

Ideas so far........

MX5 1.8 (bit slow maybe...)
MR2 (see above, although an import turbo might be alright?)
RX7 (seen nice UK turbo on pistonheads for 5.5k)
Interga Type R
Nissan 200/300zx
Scoob
3000GT

I guess main things to bear in mind are-

Quick and fun
Not to expensive to maintain
Something that can be further tuned

What do you think?

Celica GT4-ST205 are really dirt cheap now. you could pick up a mint import for around 5k. 300bhp obtained really easily and they have simply awesome brakes which are perfect for the track.

budget an additional 1k for a few handling/driver support mods and youre laughing. Not much will pass you on the track :)

OK, so let's start with first principles:

It's for trackdays only, so:

1) It doesn't have to be 'mint' - it certainly won't be after a load of trackdays
2) It has to handle
3) It has to be tuneable reasonably cheaply
4) It should be cheap to run
5) It has to handle

I would immediaately discount the MX5 as being too slow, same for the MR3. For 5K there's plenty of faster stuff. A good RX7 is possible, or a Type-R.

But I would discount a 300ZX/3000GT because they don't handle well, compared to Evo/Scoobys/Integras etc.

I would discount any Skyline just for running costs - you can't buy cheap bits - you can for an Evo or Scoob.

I would look at:

Early Evo/Early Scoob - you could get a early '90s mega tuned one off ebay for that money.
E30/E36 M3 - a ratty old E36, stripped out, with new suspension and tyres, would go like a missile. Or an E30 will outhandle pretty much anything, and it's a proper race car. Ooh: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/130094.htm
Ooh - tool ate: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/103904.htm

Porsche 944 Turbo (again, parts/wheels etc might be expensive) - look for a trackprepped Turbo or S2.
Peugeot T16 conversion - you see the Group B rally cars around sometimes - madly fast things, and it'll have had all the prep work done to it.

or: 1993 BTCC Ford: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/106240.htm

Food for thought?

RX7 would be an excellent choice - but not the cheapest car to maintain ..

How about a nice old 200SX off Ebay for say a grand and then chuck a few pennies out it.

Something like that

Always wanted a GT4!!

Lots of great advice already.

Also like the race poker dynamix, going to have a good look at that web site.

jdening- I'm with you too, had scoob's before that would be OK or evo. Even better old M3, EVO mag did an old one up for the ring I'll have to have a look through and find that and have another read. Also own Pug 1.9 in it's hay day and have looked at them with the MI16 engine converstion.

Lots to think about :D

I'd be slightly careful of big turbos and RWD only - it's not the best combination for fast cornering.

And remember that 4WD is lovely, but saps power a bit and you need to be pretty damn good at driving to get the most out of it.

I think a stripped E36 M3 would be pretty hard to beat, even with a 300bhp Scoob. Just don't forget to get a big brake kit.

I would have to say that there has been some very good advice but I would add the following too. If your budget is
