i am in the same boat. although i am falling in love with a skyline.
i have opted for RWD as i intent to drag and try drifting.
i have considered an S14 too though.
james, that was an excellent write-up :notworthy:
you been at the sugar again?
with regards other 4Wd options,
any thoughts on the cavalier GSi 4X4? or a calibra 4X4 turbo?

I've thought a bit more about this, and I'm pretty convinced I have a winner.
E30 with E36 M3 engine.
Why?
WEll, to start with, two things:
1) It will outhandle pretty much anything
2) It is *fast* - 1000kgs with 321bhp, and no 4WD transmission losses.
Also
3) Lots of cheap bits available - panels, wheels etc. etc.
4) Relatively bulletproof, no high compression turbos etc.
5) Great 'Q' car
The problem with a lot of other stuff mentioned is that it's either
a) Too expensive to run, spare panels, bits etc. - Skylines, RX7s
b) Too damn slow! MG Maestros, XR4 with 200bhp Cosworth lumps - Pah, a girl's car, m'sieur. You need 300bhp to be a real man. Even the Pug Mi16 conversions only have 160-180 bhp, and an M3 engined E30 will eat them alive.

Lots of testosterone raging through this thread  Glad to see no sweeping statements either!! (3000 GT's don't handle, Mi16 205's too slow  )
I would have to agree though that a 3 litre E30 would be great.
