Thanks for the replies all. As you've all mentioned there are numerous versions of Impreza. So if I was to say that I want a Wagon, that has a good deal of power (250+) and is generally a good spec for daily duties and fun for autotests. What would I look for? :)

Either a WRX or STi with the best mechanical integrity you can buy for your budget. Just be really disciplined about what you are looking for and do as much homework as possible before you start physically driving some, and when you go to start 'shopping' test drive a good few before you fall in love with one. You may even find that some of the guys on here will help in that respect :)

Don't overlook the sensibly modified, and well cared for, examples around that can be picked up for a song. There is a lot around to be avoided though, including the completely standard ones, so do take the time to choose well - take Gary up on his offer if you find one you like. Imprezas are sooo much fun it is hard not want 'a bit more' from them ;-)

Happy hunting!

I had a 98 Jap WRX saloon and loved it. Had plenty of poke with a zorst and intake - I'll probably be told I'm wrong by the scoobheads on here but I'm sure 98 jap WRX has 280ps out of the box? or 260 maybe? Also had a much better interior than the earlier cars.

As a dd - don't think I ever took it on track - it was much better than the EVO 5 it replaced as it was a lot less intense, the EVO always feeling manic. But then my EVO was modded to within an inch of its life and was absolutley fucking mental, I loved it, and it's yellow paint job :)

Think the scoobs the only car i've owned that just got suspension, wheels and zorst treatment instead of engine mods etc so thats probably why it felt civilised

Come to think of it, I think the reason I liked it so much was because I had my doubts that it could replace the EVO, but my first house purchase meant I needed a cheaper car and it was the best option. But far from being a disappointment I really liked it, especially when it was glued to the rear bumper of a 996 C4S which at the time must have cost more than 10x what I imported the scooby for :)

Good choice Dan
