A couple of years ago I'd have agreed with you. With the advent of computerised MOT and insurance records, and ANPR getting more and more widespread, cars like this can only get away with it (In most towns anyway) for a limited time. Any car without upto date records "pings" the ANPR, and alerts people to some easy pickings.
If found, it will 99 times out of a 100 be seized on the spot, or if found to be legally documented, but dangerous, subject to a notice that means it cannot be driven on a road, and must pass an MOT before it is re-used.
It's not perfect but it is getting better.

I totaly agree with what is being said here, But it only leads me back to the scrapage scheme and the wrong cars being crushed!:cuss: But i won`t go there.........:D

An M.O.T tester should have the powers to slap a prohibition on any car deemed un-road worthy

I spend the majority of the week collecting and MOT'ing cars for the local Toyota/Lexus dealership (they don't have MOT status) and some of the cars that i see traded in under the scrappage scheme just beggars belief! They are some of the best maintained, Low mileage & roadworthy cars you can imagine, It really bugs me that they are sent off for scrap. As Russ says, It's the wrong cars being crushed!
I also test class VII vehicles and these seem to be targeted much more by VOSA via roadside check's. The sheer amount of prohibition notices we deal with is staggering compared to cars.
Why VOSA have the power to remove vehicles from the road with (at best) a basic saftey check/emissions test and issue a fine if their criteria isn't met after x amount of days but we can't after a thorough going over just amazes me.

Ive taxed worse !!

:D :D

Trouble with giving MOT testers the power to put a prohibition notice on is that theres plenty of people who would then use this power to force work to be done to cars that are marginal in times like these when works a bit scarce.

Its always swings and roundabouts.
