Thanks for the info Steve...
That Top Gear report was quite interesting.
The S4 actualy came out quickerby a second on track, but the M3 was clearly more fun...
I think i know the M3 is a great choice, i just worried i'm following my heart and not my head...
Maybe i should just go out and buy a big diesel instead and admit i'm old!

If you did not have the extreme scoob then the choice would be simple . M3 all the way.
However you do have a toy so this has to be the sensible choice. Residuals on the audi are better than the M3 %wise and believe me it is quite nice sometime to join the ranks of normality.
Both suz and i have company cars where within reason its great to just get in the car and drive it because you need to get somewhere. No worries about image etc just a good new comfy reliable clean ride.
When you want the boyhood thrills then you roll out the toy.
My 2 penneth

you arent old enough for an audi
The V8 is superb, the noise is great and the quality is superb. Ok, so the M3 may be mor rear wheel fun, and more focused, but after driving over the Ring this weekend, It was a joy to drive and a great place to be sat.
The tyres are pricey on the M3 as it the servicing. Looked into both before I bought my S4, and that was the nail in the coffin for me.
In the wet, no competiton, and if you've got your kids in there too, its a no brainer.
(all in my biased opinion of course)
Are you local? I'd let you have a spin in mine if it helps you make your mind up.

Mike,
I think it would be the RS4 that was quicker, not an S4.
Personally I have run an Audi avant for 80k miles and certainly it was a good car, in fact the best I had owned including the R34GTR at the time. However it was pretty uninspiring to drive, you felt its size and you certainly didnt feel you were in anything other than a very safe capable car.
The BMW I have now is in a different world dynamically, the interior is obviously hard to compare as the Beemer is the latest model, it has sport interior rather than more normal seats that were in my Audi and is a more sporting version, but I still think its a valid conparison as an M series BM would be the next level up from an S series Audi sportiness wise. I have driven plenty of M3's of various models and they all have one thing in common, sometimes in larger or smaller doses, but they are all basically made for the driver to chose how much he wants rather than have the car impose the limits.
Oh and if you think Audi is the cheaper option then think again, they know how to write an invoice with the best of them
their definition of what is considered consumable is awesome !!
I wouldnt swap my Beemer for an Audi equivalent now, and I wouldnt do it with your options either.
Hope this helps,
J.

Thanks for all your comments guys....
I guess it's for me to make my final choice.....
Oh and the 1 second quicker was the time round the top gear track when they did the back to back comparison...
TBH i wouldn't read much into that as one was an SMG box the other manual and in my case neither was a wagon...

Curve ball here..........
Scooby Wagon!!
You know exactly where you are with them and can be nicely modded for not a lot!! Will be quicker and handle better than the S4, will lose the M3 on our badly rutted B-Roads, understeer easily curable for a sharper drive, you already know the mechanicals intimately, and you're bound to have some spares left over from the extreme scooby you could graft on for go-fasterness!! Sure footed handling wet or dry and very practical
OK so the interior is caca and could never match the regal feel of the Audi but then the M3 interior isn't much better either.
The money you save from not buying an Audi or M3 could be spent on the wagon. Those GB270 wagons should be appearing used on the market very soon, they won't be a lot of money for a 6mth-1yr old car and i think they look the biz!!
Now that's a curve ball
