I've just got a 90bhp Passat oil burning estate for towing my car.

It tows, just, not very fast, but good MPG.

Having said that we did KH last year with a L200, big snap-on tool box in the back, HUGE trailer (for carrying 3.5T vans) and a Gross weight over 5 tonnes!! And it didnt miss a beat, did just under 30MPG IIRC.

My friend has an L200 which he uses to tow his car. He's had it from new in 2002, it's done well over 120,000 miles and it's never let him down. WE used it to tow to Nurburgring and it was comfortable and safe towing at 80 (although the car on the trailer only weighs just over 1000kgs.)
