as a matter of policy we tend NOT to test peeps cars in general, although road mapping, etc. means needs must..............

personally have enough toys of my own to worry about driving others....and my licence / extortionate insurance costs to pay for

just got rid of a "mechanic" (for reasons that involve his abilities not driving) -- who has always worked for main dealers and couldn't understand our policy of no driving, apparently was the 'law' at past garages he has worked to test vehicle after any work??

A friend of mine recently purchased an import Evo 5 and when it arrived, the company he bought it from, told him it won`t be ready for 2 weeks. Unbeknown to him they were beasting the car and when he came to pick it up they had blown the engine.

When I worked at a main dealer we always had to test drive the vehicles after work was complete, which was quite good as I was the only one allowed to drive the Dodge Vipers :D , I mostly still do now test drive the cars depending on the work carried out, I think this is much the norm in the main dealer enviroment, but most of the so called tech`s are just out of there nappies and think they have the ability to drive any car.

i cant comment on above but if a customer told me i wasnt to test drive his car after working on it then id be refusing to work on it

yes garages do take the piss in road testing cars just to drive them but after ive fitted brakes etc i want to be the one to test and make sure they work 100%,that doesnt mean i go out trashing cars as said above we have toys of our own.

just giving my view :-D

just been reading through more of the thread, the guy who crashed his car got one of his mates to come and recover the car back to the recovery places premises, looking abit dodgy as people are saying that he might be doctering the brakes himself so he can get out of it. surely its upto the person whos car it is to decide where the car goes not the garage who crashed ?

i personally would get the police involved.

I know Dick (the proprietor) from HRD very well. If it was him that crashed it I would assume there had genuinely been a mechanical failure. Based on my experience of his driving ability  I must ask him his version of it tomorrow, perhaps was a spotty 17year old tech?

like every body else.......30 my @rse, I've picked up a lot of accident damaged cars and as said above, part tend to bend or twist below 40, above 50 and things get ripped off or snap.
I don't mind garages testing the work done on my car to a degree, but I know a well known car audio company in Norwich who were caught thrashing a customers impreza, this is kind of test is totally unacceptable and unless mechanical mods or services have been carried out totally unjustified

Now there's another one on S/net. Guy put his RA into a garage for a new clutch. Road tested by the garage and now has a rod through the block.

I used to have a 205Gti, it was in the garage for repairs - I happened to by driving my mums fiesta - only to be passed by my 205 with an XR in hot pursuit breaking speed limits and generally being thrashed to buggery.... worked in my favour as when I collected my car they mentioned that I needed a new driveshaft ....

I suggested maybe it broke on their test drive that I witnessed... they didn't charge me for a driveshaft :)

I also made the mistake of taking my GTR for an MOT at a Nissan dealership - when I collected it, it was obivous from seat positions and open windows that it had been for a 4 up test drive!.

Problem is with all of this, there are always people somewhere in every business that will take the piss, end of - but also we are being asked to judge an incident that we actually don't have the information to be able to really choose a side - the internet is dangerous in this method, guilty by forum posts !! ... yep we can all look at the pics and hear the story - but we don't know the truth ...
