I'm pretty sure within the boundary of an MOD establishment, they have full powers. HOWEVER, morally right or wrong, the bloke will get pissed off seeing you driving around ignoring him (Thats how he'll see it) My observation would be it appears to be a fraction wider than the body of the car, and therefore it may well be illegal. The best thing is to either speak to Suffolk Traffic about it (As long as it's insured as modified- no point inviting trouble) and if they say it's legit, the MOD boys will have to bow to their knowledge. An MOT tester saying it's ok is all well and good, but firstly they won't put in on paper, and secondly it won't make it legal.
From the current MOT book
"<TABLE border=1 cellSpacing=0 borderColor=#ffffff borderColorLight=#ffffff borderColorDark=#ffffff cellPadding=5 width="95%"><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top background=images/pageback.gif borderColor=#ffffff colSpan=3 align=justify>Body Condition
</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top background=images/lightblue.gif borderColor=#ffffff width="29%" align=justify>Body condition
This part of the examination applies to all vehicles.
</TD><TD vAlign=top background=images/lightblue.gif borderColor=#ffffff width="45%" align=justify>4. Examine the body work for excessive corrosion or damage resulting in sharp edges which are likely to cause injury,
</TD><TD vAlign=top background=images/lightblue.gif borderColor=#ffffff width="26%" align=justify>4. A sharp edge or projection, caused by corrosion or damage, which renders the vehicle dangerous to other road users, including pedestrians
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
The projection part is a potential issue, but as MOT's are subjective to the individual tester, thats why they are worth as w@nk on the day they are issued
It's a shame as the car looks stunning, but I think if it were a bit narrower, you might have gotten away with it. (What do I know? I'm not a traffic cop or an MOT tester) You could always be brave and register on www.UkPoliceOnline.co.uk and post your photos in the Road Policing Section...you'll get a variety of responses no doubt, but at least they ARE likely to know what they are on about.
