Bigpower Version 2

Post by Stuart »

Well, now it looks like the site is a bit more stable, I thought you guys deserved an explanation :)

Basically Bigpower, as a forum and club, is nearing three years old and the time, effort and space to run it has become an enormous project. The plan was to seamlessly move the forum from one server to another. The reality was a bit of a nightmare. Sorry.

We needed a faster, more flexible server so we got one

We needed more space too so we got that as well

We needed a faster, more functional site so we needed better software. Once again we bought that.

With all of these improvements, there has to be a downside. Duncan will be stepping out of the running of the site due to his own increasing business commitments so that means his valuable expertise in the area of website techie stuff is gone. A shame but I'd like to wish him all of the best with his business and racing interests. I'm sure he'll still keep us up to date with his Time Attack and Sti stuff.

Thanks for your help in building the forum Dunk :D

Please bear with me as I get a handle on the basics. I'll have some help along the way but I'm really looking forwards to getting stuck in and learning a lot more about building forums.

I expect most of the functionality to be in place by next weekend and we have a whole host of new things to say 'thanks' to you guys for any disturbance that has been caused.

If you have any suggestions, things you would have loved on the old site that we never used, please email me with your thoughts

Thanks

Onwards and upwards eh :D

I am sure everyone will understand that things take time to happen with such a huge task as changing server.

I would also like to wish Duncan the best of luck
I may be getting older but I REFUSE to grow up :D

Well! That's a bit of a shock to learn that Duncan is no longer part of BP admin. Meanwhile, here's wishing him all the very best with his business commitments and TA endeavours.

So is this thread here to list desirables as opposed to the other thread's missings?

If so...........

..............Can we have a search function that delves within threads as opposed to just highlighting the thread where the search string may be found?

An example, as I've brought up before, is Duncan's own build and TA threads. I've tried to find various bits of info from within his tome without success, despite knowing it's there. I tried, the other day, to find the name of the company who fitted his roll cage. Entered the search string and it returned the thread where I knew the answer was anyway

Yeah you can Gerry
You have to hit search then advanced search. Once in that area you hit the filters for the poster's name 'Dunk', the area of the forum you want to search, so 'projects' and the keyword which would be 'roll cage' or 'rollcage'

(I think you mean these guys by the way ;) http://www.cylex-uk.co.uk/company/shp-m ... 77972.html )

Good luck Duncan, wishing you all the best for TA and your new business endeavours. Buena suerte con todo Amigo!!

Stuart.....You're a man with very large cojones taking on this responsibilty and the not inconsiderable amount of steep learning curve you'll be going through. I've tried building a simple website and have found it a hopeless task. A complex project like a fully fledged and multi faceted working forum is a monumental task and i sincerely wish you all the best hombre!!

Now then....my question is why didn't anyone ever use the chat room on the old BP site. I went on it a few times only to find nobody ever bothered...or was it just me nobody wanted to talk to :D Shame really as i felt it was a good place for some witty banter and quick comms.

Is it worth bringing it back and will anyone use it if you do.

Cheers!!
Buggers cancelled my op just a couple of days before it was due. Inconsiderate barstewards!!

Chat rooms? Never got used on version one so I'm unsure of any desire for one on version two, but I'll consider all ideas for building a bigger and better forum/club

Thanks for the 'good luck'. It should be fun learning and I hope I can do you guys proud. I love throwing a good event, so if I can get my head around the forum too, we should be OK :)

The chat room could have been quite good but the couple of times I looked in there, no one else did. Although I spend most of the day talking to myself  you tend to get funny looks when doing it in public.

Well you guys have done us proud for the past three years, so just more of the same would be good. :)

Here here, muchos thank you to dunk - well done stu for stepping up to the plate aswell as a manic learning curve :).

And bumholes to a chat room .. lol - stop francis.

One thing that would be cool if we could keep the ability to have peoples real names - I prefer speaking to a person as opposed to a silly username ...
