I wondered how you'd make a little 1.8 sound that awesome. Any idea of the sort of money you'd be talking to get an engine like that? .. are we talking GTR money or minor remortgage?. :)

Lehmann make race engines Ben. I would think you could very easily sink 50k into a Gti to get close to Gaetan's spec but that's only based on
2k for the wheels
1k for the tyres
5k for the gearbox
1.5k got the cage
1.5k for the carbon bodywork
3k for the shell and prep
2k for the ECU
500 for the dash
2k for the diff
3k for the brakes
3k for the suspension
500 for the ARBs
25k for the race engine
By the time you allow for fuel systems, fire extinguishers, seats and harnesses you could easily add another

plenty of conversions out there if you wanted a little more oooomph most common being mk3 2.0l 16v (as mikeb's) 1.8 g60 supercharged, 20valve turbo, 2.9 vr6, most of the engines will slip in and been done a million times before so loads of info on what not to do etc..
or do a little headwork on your engine with some nicer cams and a warm up regulator mod, not going to set the world on fire but it will be improved

the beauty of vag is most parts are interchangable :)

Not too late to buy the Cupra and put the engine, ECU, gearbox, brakes, hub and suspension straight into a mk1 or mk2!
This time tomorrow and it may well be too late though :)
